Companies who serve and advertise junk food also have a reputation of brainwashing the viewers mind set. Companies can weaken the minds of the viewers, mainly children and teens, by putting in a popular person from a well known TV show or movie to advertise their junk food products. For instance, when a child or teen watches their favorite TV show they become so interested in the storyline that is taking place on that particular episode. A study shows that in the United States, “over 30% of people like to watch shows that mainly have drama in it”

It's important to view this as a huge number because that 30% of people who like to watch a show with drama in it, is a target to people who advertise junk food. When something becomes popular whether its a TV show, a movie, or a genre, companies that are known to sell junk food will eventually advertise their food where everyone is tuning in and watching what is popular, such as when your watching a show that is trending around the country and when they go to commercial break, companies advertise their newly created junk food. To make it worst when a show is very popular and there is a particular character in that show that everyone likes advertisers will find a way to use that particular celebrity to help advertise their products which does work, and again brings in these companies a lot of money every year.

“If You Pitch It, They Will Eat It”, by David Barboza, he states that “food companies don't feel like they are the blame for people gaining weight and that food companies believe that its a person’s lack of exercise and poor supervision and eating habits.” Barboza also goes on to say that food companies say they offer more healthy choices, but the consumers don't want a healthy snack when they go to a fast food chain, they want a treat.

Most big food companies, despite some promises to offer healthier foods and in some cases to limit marketing in schools, deny that they are to blame for the epidemic of excess weight. They insist that sedentary behavior, a lack of exercise and poor supervision and eating habits are responsible.

Food companies say their commercials don't encourage overeating, that the foods they advertise are meant to be ''part of a balanced diet,'' and that some foods are meant to be only occasional treats.

''We talk about offering carrot sticks,'' says Karlin Linhardt, the director of youth marketing at McDonald's. “We offer them carrot sticks at home.

Because of this statement from food companies It seems that consumers don't want to always choose the right food choice. If you put a desert or a piece of fruit in front of a consumer, more than likely they will choose the desert over the fruit, and it is understandable that food companies don't control what the consumers buy. However food companies are still at fault because if they really cared about how obesity is affecting our country, they would all come to an agreement to make a change on what they advertise, eventually they would start advertising more healthy foods instead of junk food that causes the consumer to go overboard on what they buy.
