High School Math (MMM)

Math was never my strongest subject; I felt the need to be good at it though, since all my peers were and expected me to be as well (because I was Asian). I remember sitting at the kitchen table at 12am with my dad on multiple occasions, struggling and crying over math equations. insert skull emoji. To this day I can't say I enjoy math, and sometimes I would get math anxiety when someone asks me a math question.

For me, I was someone who fit into the MMM stereotype: I performed well in secondary school and had a plethora of accolades to illustrate my achievements. However, when I moved across the country to Toronto for post-secondary, I struggled to acclimatize in the big city. That's when my imposter syndrome started to develop. The simultaneous balancing of adulthood, independence, and academic excellence was overwhelming. Every shortcut I took, every achievement I received, every milestone I accomplished felt undeserved because I wasn't stable emotionally or mentally during that time. I've become much more affirmative of my abilities and accomplishments now, thanks to my support systems and community -- however, it is a struggle I see constantly within my [Asian] students.
