Reflection on Animal Physiology .

Name: Siti Balqish binti Zulbahrin
Matric Number: D20162075564

Assalamualaikum and hye everyone, today i would like to write my reflection on my experience learning and dealing with animal physiology subject. From the first week of learning this subject, i am so excited as all my senior said that this subject is quite challenging and hard. I love to challenge myself .

From my point of view, yes animal physiology subject is one of the most challenging subject but at the time it give you pressure you will also have so much fun. In this subject, we need to understand and do lots of revision. We need to understand everything about the body system and for the 14 weeks we have studied about 11 topics that is introduction to animal physiology, nervous system, sensory system, muscular system, circulatory system, respiratory system, immune system, digestive system, excretory system, reproductive system and endocrine system. Every chapter is interesting as i can learn more on human body system and we can relate it with what is happening in our daily life and health. This knowledge help me to help other people by giving advice to them such as to take care of their digestion system by not eating after 9 pm because it will weaken our digestion system and produce fats. So people who love to eat heavy food during mid-night hour will easily have obesity and it is not good for their heart and health.

Next, my friends and i also have done a Program Based Learning activities which helps to build a teamwork spirit between us because we have done it in a group of four. Based from my opinion, PBL is a great activity that can be done especially among students. It helps to enhance students critical thinking and help students to build a creative thinking among each other in a team. For me, I have learned lots of things especially on how to handle a critical problem such as how to help people taking ICE. What is the effect of people taking ICE? What is the ingredients in the ICE? How ICE effect human’s brain and many more. But what I have realised is that, I cannot gain much information if I have to do this activity alone. I have learned on how to work as a team. Which means what you need to do so that you can build a good team work and accepting people’s idea. PBL improve my way of thinking as it is not an easy task where each one of us need to refer and read many articles regarding our topic on issues that we need to settle. Many people don’t like to read so do I but by doing this PBL activity, indirectly I have make myself read and find info in lots of articles. Other than that, it enhances my social skills and my individual accountability where we need to find the answers together in a group and then we need to present individually to the class.

Other than that, my friends and i also have done few experiment according to every topic we learnt. So from these experiment, i have learned many new things and gain new knowledge. As an example we do experiment about how to check our blood pressure and how to calculate the capacity of air level in our lung by using spirometer. Next, we also get an awesome experience on seeing the membrane of frog legs even though everyone feel scared with the frog but we managed to do it. We also have done experiment on brine shrimp and chicken muscle that for me both is very stressful because we need to cut down the muscle as thin as we can so that we can clearly see the cell under the microscope.

Besides that, we also go to the Institute for Medical Research Open Day and all of us have fun doing activities there. I have donated my blood for the first time and that is the best experience i can say. I got lots of present after playing all the games and answering the quiz given. Other than i have fun playing games, i also refresh my knowledge about science and get to learn new things. I have also go into the bacterium department, into their laboratory which is private and cannot be entered easily as everyone need to follow the procedure. I learned on how to wash our hands with the right step and few type of bacterium that can affect our health as bacteria lives everywhere. Dr Mohan have explain further to us on their research about bacteria such as E.coli, Streptococcus and Mycobacteria and how do these bacteria affect us in our daily life if we do not practice our personal hygiene in our daily life.

On our field trip we have go to Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, Lanchang, Pahang. It is the greatest experience i have ever go because i get the chances to know more about elephants and the most important part is we need to save this cutest and important animal. They have gone through so many things because of illegal activities done by those who is not responsible. I also have the chances to cut the foods that will be given to the elephant. Little that i know, besides eating fruits these elephants were also given cattle bran. Elephant is a very sensitive but brilliant animal. Giving foods to the elephants and getting the opportunity to touch the elephant trunk is the best, memorial and fun experience for me . Last but not least, i would like to thanks Dr Syakirah and Dr Liana for teaching us this subject and for giving us new knowledge and beautiful fun moments that we will remember till the end of our life. Thank you.
