         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. My name is Paige. I am originally from North Kingstown, Rhode Island but now live in Columbia, South Carolina. I am taking classes at JWU to complete my DPD requirements. I am most interested in becoming a functional medicine dietitian. I choose this course because I felt in my other master's program this was not covered fully enough.&nbsp;<br>2. Of the topics being covered I am very excited to learn about fluid and electrolyte balance,&nbsp; the different vitamin metabolisms, and about creating personalized nutrition plans.&nbsp;<br>3. In helping connect with peers, I have attached a picture of my dog. Who doesn't love pups. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Week 2 Discussion : Nutrition</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This week I looked into the nutrition information provided by the National Kidney Foundation. There are several parts of the page, encompassing topics from Kidney disease stages, dialysis, transplant, and kidney stones in relation to diet. But also covers Nutrient management, plant-based diets, and DASH. The NKF provides meaningful, tangible nutrition information including recipes for all skill levels and most dietary preferences/ limitations. The recipes are separated into categories which makes finding something to fit your needs much easier. Some of the highlighted categories were Low Potassium Dinners, Transplant Friendly Brunch, and Vegan Snacks. I was impressed by the extent to which NKF went to help individuals be successful. <br><br>When looking at the section on managing phosphorus intake, covered the basic biological function of the mineral as well as explaining how phosphorus interacts with the kidneys. It lists the foods that should be limited, medications that can help manage levels, and where to get your phosphorus levels checked. While similar was available for many other nutrients, I focused most on sodium. The same lists were available for sodium that were for phosphorus except the sodium list included substitutions to make life a little easier for those managing their kidney health. Kidney disease often causes dysregulation of the body's water balance and sodium-potassium pumps creating issues like fluid retention, high blood pressure and can cause increased discomfort for those getting dialysis. I found the site to be very informative, down to the use of salt substitutes, flavor pairings, and how to identify levels of sodium on nutrition labels. The one area that was lacking was examples of food substitutes, for example, it says natural cheeses are generally okay, but the average person may not know what that means. <br><br>Overall the site is very user-friendly and offers an immense amount of information for free.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This week I focused on a female collegiate athlete who is struggling to maintain hydration during the season. She is working hard to be better on the field but found that she was often dizzy or nauseous during or after practice. This makes her not want to eat and she has started to lose weight and muscle.          <description><![CDATA[<div><br><br>This week I made two info graphics about the first is basic information about the immune system and how it functions. The second infographic touches on what micronutrients are essential for the immune system to function. I focused on vitamins and minerals that are considered antioxidants. <br>This resource is client-facing so it was important that I not add too much jargon, so I practiced simplifying complex relationships into easily digestible tidbits. <br><br>My client is an adult female who is struggling with her health due to an undernourished immune system. As with most adults, her life is busy so I wanted to make this resource a quick guide rather than an exhaustive look at the complexities of immune health. The average person does not need that information and likely will not retain it for long.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This week I created two infographics about for osteoporosis for a 65 year old women who is struggling to maintain her bone health. The first source explains the basics of what osteoporosis is without getting overly technical. This includes information on what happens to your bones when the osteoclasts and osteoblasts are out of sync. <br>The second infographic talks about lifestyle factors that can be altered to help prevent further bone tissue degeneration. This included several kinds of exercise as well as dietary sources for key bone health nutrients. <br>I also included a website that is great for walking someone who is newly diagnosed with osteoporosis, through the basics so that living and treating it are no so scary.&nbsp; <br><strong>Works Cited </strong><br><em>Osteoporosis exercise for strong bones</em>.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I created 2 infographics, one explaining the&nbsp; function of each micronutrient of focus, and the second talking about dietary recommendations as well as sources. The information I created was a for a 32 year old women who is a vegan. She is starting to struggle to keep up with the day to day energy requirements due to lack of B vitamins being eaten. Many of the B vitamins are found in animal proteins or dairy products which she was not eating. <br>I created the resources because I think they would be helpful to a person struggling to keep there energy up despite their best efforts. Giving dietary sources can be an easy way to fix this problem.          <description><![CDATA[<div><br>This week we are focusing on brain and blood health. This first source I created explains what each vitamin does and some of the dietary sources for these nutrients. It is incredibly important to keep these vitamins and minerals steady in this case because we are looking at a patient who recently had gastric bypass which limits that amount a person can consume.&nbsp;<br><br>The second source I created shows how much of a each of the 4 nutrients above&nbsp;can be found in certain foods which can help the patient choose carefully what to eat in order to reach their needs.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I choose to go back to week 2 and focus on electrolytes for colligate athletes. The client I chose to cover is a female track athlete who is struggling to maintain her electrolytes which is hurting her performance in meets but also affecting her ability to fuel her performance.&nbsp;<br>The old resource I created only discussed the basics of electrolytes and did not address nutrient timing, rehydration, and electrolyte balance.&nbsp;The new resource that addressed these gaps were made to print to the size of business cards or index cards so that they can be carried with to practices and so on. <br>Works cited <br>•NSCA.
