I disagreed with Richard's actions when he set Sasha's skirt on fire. He wanted to have fun, but I don't understand how setting someone's skirt on fire is "fun". It led to Sasha getting up to third degree burns. If he wanted to have fun, he should have played with Lloyd or something. Fire is not a game, and he should have been educated that. I understand he is young and grew up in a type of neighborhood where fire isn't considered dangerous, but even ruining a random person's clothing is still bad. If I were him, I would try to value human life more, and think about the consequences of my actions.

The author's purpose in writing The 57 Bus was for many reasons, two being the most prominent. The first is telling the story of these two teens, and how they were tied together with one bus. The second reason for writing this book is to demonstrate the impact of perspective. From Sasha's perspective, they realized that their agender status would leave them subject to hate crimes, so they immediately thought it was a hate crime. Meanwhile, Richard just thought Sasha was weird, and didn't mean to actually harm them. This book was meant to illustrate the thinking and minds of different people, and the consequences. Eventually, it's hard not to feel bad for both of them.

Richard shows his personality through his actions in many ways. In the beginning of the book, Richard asks a teacher dealing with troubled students, Ms. Kaprice, to help him. He couldn't focus on his schoolwork, but knew that the right guidance would go a long way. This gives insight to many traits about him. He cares about his schoolwork, but needs guidance to help him out for he cannot study by himself. Next, he sets Sasha's skirt on fire because he wanted to have fun and thought Sasha was weird. This shows he is a goofy person and doesn't think about the consequences of his actions. And last, he writes two apology letters to Sasha. Through his words, it is clear that he feels remorse, and will take his sentence without complain. These letters show his personality to be maturing, starting with taking the punishment for his actions and thinking about the consequences of his actions.

The setting affects the characters' actions in many ways. For example, Sasha isn't afraid to be themselves on the bus because of the accepting school and society they were raised in. Meanwhile, Richard was raised in a shabbier neighborhood in East Oakland, making him more abrasive and rough around the edges. Also, the setting affects the route the 57 Bus takes, for if it wasn't for the bus, perhaps this wouldn't have happened.

I never knew someone could get third degree burns in the span of a minute or so. I thought third degree burns happened when someone was in a fire for around 5 minutes, not a few seconds. Sasha's, and Richard's life changed in a span of a few seconds. This reminds me of the song, "Life Changes" by Thomas Rhett, because his lyrics convey what Sasha and Richard must have been feeling. They had a good and normal life, which suddenly turned into court hearings and people screaming for justice.

This book made me feel very outraged. I glared at it many times. I was very angry. First, I was angry at Sasha. Why would you sleep on a bus?!?! You are on public transportation, but without anyone you know and some people hate you because they think you are weird (Because they're LGBTQ). But I was especially angry at Richard. To have "fun" he decided to light someone on fire. What type of sixteen-year old does that? Being raised in a rough neighborhood does not excuse stupid behaviour. Most of the time throughout the book, I felt exactly like the meme below. It didn't have to be about fire, it was mostly about everyone's actions in general.

(I made this meme but the picture doesn't belong to me)
