I am so grateful for all your kindness and support for me and my family over the years in Los Angeles, Venice, and at Tufts when you came for the Utopian Listening conference back in 2016!
 That conference and the chance to interact with you, Alvise, and all the great musicians and scholars who took part, is one of my proudest achievements; it never would have happened without you!
 I hope to see you soon back in Venice!

der dieses faszinierende Ganze ebenso verkörpert und repräsentiert 

wie tatkräftig zusammenhält.

 

Lassen Sie sich dafür danken, dass es Sie gibt 

(mit dem Auf-die-Welt-Kommen allein ist es ja in der Regel nicht getan),

dass Sie entscheidend dazu beigetragen haben, dass all das noch nicht so schnell ins unwiederbringlich Geschichtliche zurückgewichen ist, dass es seine Aktualität weiterhin gleichsam physisch demonstrieren kann;

 

aber auch dafür, dass Sie bei soviel Loyalität und Einsatzbereitschaft

sich selbst als lebendige Person nicht haben zum Verschwinden bringen lassen.

It’s been 25 years since we launched our joint career in showbiz. Not many photographs to illustrate I could find, unfortunately, but here are some memorable moments that come to mind:

 

·      Our first joint lecture-recital at the Gulbenkian Foundation with a subsequent marathon through Lisbon trying to find a restaurant that would serve us a »Coup Molotow«.

 

·      A car ride from Konstanz to Zürich Airport, during which we almost stranded en route, because we couldn’t find a gas station that would take my money or credit card. (Gas stations in Switzerland probably only serve customers with a secret bank account.)

 

·      Our first live broadcast in Saarbrücken that would initiate our actual »show« for years to come…

 

·      Darmstadt and Frankfurt (Alte Oper): Presentations that exceeded 3 hours, dwarfing most any Wagner Opera. (Unforgettable then: »Verklärte Nacht« as an encore with a group of students from Saarbrücken.)

 

·      Berlin (Konzerthaus): Our show on Gigi’s music with a subsequent performance of »Y entonces comprendió« and »…..sofferte onde serene…«

 

·      Chapel Hill: A joint appearance that would lead to a permanent job offer — I’ve been on faculty there since 2008!

 

·      Eastman: The remarkable moment, when during the Q&A segment of our presentation a member of the audience asked: “Mrs. Nono, may I show you my tattoo?” to which you responded, “It depends on which body part it is.” The young man then proceeded to show us the Schoenberg painting »Der Sieger« he had tattooed on his thigh.

 

·      And then of course the many, many wonderful trips we took together by plane, train, and car in the US, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, England, Denmark, Norway with so many wonderful conversations and having so much fun.

Ich wünsche vor allem viel Gesundheit und Kraft für Ihre so vielfältigen wichtigen und schönen Aufgaben, die Sie mit der Ihnen eigenen sehr großen Hingabe wahrnehmen. First of all, my best wishes for a splendid and marvelous birthday which you so richly deserve! My years at the Arnold Schoenberg Institute opened up a fascinating world which has led me to some great adventures in life and some understanding of a time before I was born. I’m so deeply grateful for those years at ASI and for knowing you, Ron, and Larry. May you have a fabulous year ahead!

Ho conosciuto per una singolare coincidenza e ora posso dire con un colpo di fortuna Nuria alcuni anni fa.

Al termine di un mio concerto , organizzato dall’Associazione Musica Venezia  dedicato alla giornata della memoria Nuria venne da me per commentare il programma e la mia esecuzione ( non sapevo però nulla di lei ne chi fosse ) dopo una breve conversazione mi salutò e io ripresi a parlare con i miei amici. Poco dopo tornò da me per dirmi “ Gian Luca scusa non mi ero presentata , sono Nuria Nono Schoenberg “. Io rimasi sbigottito e non riuscii a dire nient’altro che … la figlia di e la moglie di…?? Lei scoppiò a ridere e mi disse certo che si . Questo e il mio numero di telefono , dammi il tuo e passa a trovarmi in Archivio !!!. 

Alcuni giorni dopo , mentre guidavo risposi al telefono senza guardare chi fosse ed era lei  che mi diceva : passa a trovarmi ti aspetto.

Non potevo attendere , ci accordammo e passai tre ore bellissime con lei in Archivio. Nuria è una incredibile testimone del’900.

Da quel giorno è nata una bella importante amicizia. Ho portato i miei studenti del liceo, ho coinvolto altri giovani e associazioni musicali della regione per far conoscere questa meravigliosa realtà e l’opera di questo  musicista , ma soprattutto uomo di straordinaria cultura che era Luigi Nono.

Vorrei ricordare poi quando Nuria e Serena furono invitate all’intitolazione a Luigi Nono della mia ex scuola media, l’I.C Luigi Nono di Mira . Passarono una mattinata con i ragazzi che , meravigliosamente preparati dai loro docenti intervistarono Nuria per poi eseguire una melodia di Natale armonizzata da Arnold Schoenberg e 2 degli epitaffi per Garcia Lorca di Nono. Più volte nel tempo Nuria mi ha parlato di quella mattinata come una delle più emozionanti della sua vita, questo a ulteriore testimonianza del suo amore per i giovani e della sua voglia di stare con loro per raccontare la sua storia.

E’ nata anche una bella amicizia con la figlia Serena , che mi ha permesso di organizzare un programma all’interno dell’ultimo Festival con un concerto corale con protagonisti giovani realtà del territorio provenienti dai licei musicali di Padova e Conegliano, dai conservatori di Venezia e Padova e con il coro Harmonia di Marghera.

In questi anni ho potuto ammirare la forza  e la determinazione di Nuria, esempio per molti, per coinvolgere giovani, per far conoscere, organizzare eventi, far discutere e riflettere sempre attorno all’opera di suo marito .Un esempio raro di amore infinito.

Grazie Nuria della tua amicizia. Buon compleanno!!!

I hope you have enjoyed our edition of Schoenberg’s Correspondence with Alma Mahler, which we dedicated to you!  It includes Schoenberg’s letter about his spouse that you told me about at my first Schoenberg conference in 1991, and which set me on my particular research journey!  I am always grateful to you for that, and for your visits to Greensboro. One of them, a virtual visit in 2011, was for the symposium “Luigi Nono, the Italian Serialists, and Musical Modernism,” which I organized with my dear colleague of blessed memory Irna Priore.

It meant so much to us that you could Skype in.

I’m retiring from UNC Greensboro this year, but my Schoenberg research continues, I think of you often, and I have not given up on the possibility of visiting the Nono archive in Venice!
