An aria (Italian air) is a piece of music created to be sung by a solo voice without a chorus, usually with orchestral accompaniment and as part of an opera.
It is the part where the soloist shine more.
During the XVII century, in the time of baroque opera, the aria was written in ternary form.
In the middle of the XIX century, the operas became a sequence of arias, reducing the space available for the recitatives.

Actually, an aria is currently used for plays or, generally, operas openings.
