December 7, 1941

120,000 Japanese Americans were alienated from the United States after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The military broke into houses of Japanese Americans and began to take their belongings after President Roosevelt Executive Order 9066.

Japanese Americans were pushed out of the United States some of them migrated and others stayed by force. 7,000 Japanese Americans were settled to camp Harmony in Puyallup, Washington where entire families were packed into converted stables and barracks. Many of them were settled in camps and did not receive medical care and most of the children were taught in poorly equipped classrooms.

At noon on August 15 (Japanese time), the emperor announced Japan’s surrender in his first-ever radio broadcast. On September 2, World War II ended when U.S. General Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan’s formal surrender aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay along with a flotilla of more than 250 Allied warships.
