E-Portfolio 1: Art and Science of Teaching

Art and Science of Teaching- what is your position about the nature of teaching – is it an Art, or Science, or both? Explain your thoughts.

In teaching, teacher is not only playing a role as a content expert (having knowledge) but they must ensure that the knowledge is delivered and received effectively by their students. The knowledge that teacher has is acquired from the science of learning where they gone through several processes that is from experiencing, conceptualizing, analyzing and applying. Through experiencing, the teacher not only know something that familiar but they try to think out of the box by dismantling something that less familiar to them. In conceptualizing, the knowledge is expanded by integrating all the concepts and theories into summary or maps. Teachers can increase their knowledge identifying the gaps, analyze models, and review and not only simply analyze and explain something according to the flow of diagram. In applying the knowledge, the teacher acquires more knowledge from their creativity, innovativeness, and ability to translate the knowledge in different modes. In deliver the knowledge, the teacher practicing the science of teaching when they utilizes the knowledge, deliver it to the students and improve their teaching methods through continuous assessment and reflection.

The process of teaching and learning will not complete and success by simply delivering the knowledge to the students without any improvement and adjustment in the teaching techniques. Delivery knowledge to students require the art of teaching where the teacher must have a better planning and well organize along the process of teaching and learning. Teacher must know every single things and the rationality of their action, and decide what, when and how they do to ensure that the process of teaching and learning is active in the classroom. They must alert with their teaching and learning environment and being creative in disseminate their knowledge to the students. If the objective of teaching and learning is not achieved then the teacher must be willing to improve their techniques and skills. Besides, teacher must be empathy and alert with their surroundings and adjusting and orchestrates their teaching and learning appropriately according to the environment and level of students.

Thus, I believe that to have effective teaching and learning process, it is necessary to teacher to integrate both art and science of teaching in the classroom. Implementing both science and art in teaching and learning will encourage the active, dynamic and interesting learning environment to the students and assist in achieving the objectives of teaching and learning.

E-Portfolio 3: Last Lecture

Reflective Educators – If you can compose your legacy as an educator, what would you write about? Write your thoughts about your “Last Lecture”.

Teacher is a noble and respected profession in the world. Teacher is the one who can spread the knowledge he has got to others. Professor Hamka has quoted that “The eternal beauty lies on one’s manners and knowledge, but not on appearance”. Thus, manners distinguish the dignity of the knowledgeable person. The best behavior of a teacher is, as it says: “Whoever studies a knowledge, then practices it, and then teaches it to others, it includes a group called” magnifying “the kingdom of heaven.” then acting with it, and also teaching it to others, then he is seen more noble than the angels of heaven or the angels in charge of the earth.”

My respectable fellow teachers, show your kindness, sympathy and even empathy to your students, and treat them as your own children. Besides parents, teacher is like a father or mother to the students. Students are trust from parents to teacher. Thus, besides teaching for the knowledge, teacher has heavy responsibility as guidance and protector of the students from the wrongdoing. Be sincere in giving knowledge and not expecting any rewards and position.

My fellow teachers, if you truly live your knowledge, do not be arrogant but be more humble and keep yourself closer to God. In surah al-Isra’ verse 37, Allah said, “and do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth (apart), and you will never reach the mountains in height”. A good teacher shows a good deed to their students and always gives advices to the students. Teacher must not degrade any other knowledge in front of the students. Teacher must encourage their students to love to learn as much as other knowledge.

My fellow teachers, teaching your students to the limits of their ability to understand and do not convey material beyond the limits of the understanding of the students. Present your lessons in easy ways to understand. At the same time make the necessary explanations in the context of the present or the real examples that occur in everyday life. All of that for the purpose of developing the understanding gained by a student, in order to be easier to practice. Teach your limited ability students with something clear, straightforward, and in accordance with their limited level of understanding. Update your knowledge in line with the progress of the times and learn from your experience and use your wisdom to improve your teaching skills and in building a good relationship with your students.

My fellow teachers do first what you teach, and should not lie to what you have to say. Knowledge can be absorbed by the inner eye, and the charity can be witnessed through the eyes of birth. Many have eyes born, but very few have and willing to utilize inner eyes. Therefore, if the act of a teacher is contrary to what he is advocating, it means he is not helping to guide and guide, but rather to poison or disaster. A teacher can be likened to a seal made on clay, and a student like his clay. If the seal does not have a steady character, then there is no site that will imprint on the clay or the media. Students are your main responsibility and you eill be ask own your responsibility in hereafter as in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 44 mentioned, “Why do you ask others to do good, while you forget about yourself (obligations)?” Meanwhile Imam Ali once said “Two potential groups of humanity that bring disaster to us are, knowledgeable people who do not guard the honor of the knowledge he has gotten, and the ignorant who follow the way of ascetic, to worship without knowledge. The knowledgeable person misleads people with negligence, while ignorant people mislead people through their stupid deeds that are not based on knowledge in practice.”

Be happy in giving your service to the community because you are among those who important in sharpening the potential leaders in the future. Appreciate and use your time wisely as time is running fast to spread a good deeds and advice to your family, friends, students, and you society. Thus, learn from the Surah al-Asr as it mentioned that, " By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience."

There is a new lecturer in your faculty and you are assigned to help him/her as a peer mentor. Briefly describe three (3) aspects in university teaching and learning that you think are critically important to share with your colleague. Support your explanation with relevant examples based on your personal experiences or readings.

Teaching at the university in this 21st century is quite challenging. Nowadays, the teaching system is changed from the teacher-centered to student centered and as a lecturer we have to change our traditional style of teaching into more active learning activities engaging tools and technology. No matter how the teaching and learning style change, teacher is still playing a very important role in ensuring the process of learning is going smoothly, creating the interesting learning environment, and ability to learn effectively to their students.

Thus, three critical aspects of teaching and learning at the university that the new lecturer must focus are first, the lecturer must have a better planning for their teaching and learning. Before start the lesson, the lecturer must have a better plan for their lesson so that they can ensure that the knowledge given to the students clear and can be understand simply by the students. The well prepared lecturer have a good structure of lecture contents, clearly defined the objectives of lesson and giving clear instruction, emphasized on the important points, prepare and provide the ample resources for the students and deliver knowledge effectively. As the content expert, lecturer must always keep knowledge and the course contents up to date. It does not mean that the lecturer must know everything, but they are willing to learn from their students by welcoming their ideas and involve them in the learning activities.

Second, lecturer must have good personal qualities and good attitude towards students in teaching. However, the personal quality can be developed and improved by time and experience. Lecturer must enthusiasm in teaching their course and being professional in teaching. The good personal qualities lecturer can motivating their students and is a role model to their students. The good lecturer must be easy going, relaxed or open in receiving any idea from the students and they wanted to learn, understand and develop critical thinking abilities, as well as master content or learn skills. The good lecturer must show empathy with student thinking, anticipating misconceptions and allowing students to develop understanding in a variety ways. They also encourage the students to involve actively in class through active learning techniques and encourage student giving informal feedbacks for their teaching. They create a welcoming learning environment where the students feel safe to express their feeling and learn to respect and listen to others, giving value to the student idea and bring positive energy to the classroom every day.

The third critical aspect of teaching and learning is the lecturer must love to learn continuously and renewing themselves with new teaching strategies or incorporating new technologies into lessons and always seems to be the one whom willing to share what they learn with colleagues. The lecturer must be flexible and find new ways to present material if the lesson isn’t working and make sure that every student understanding is increased. They love collaboration as a way to learn from experienced colleagues and fellow professional. They accept the constructive criticism and advice as an opportunity to grow as an educator. They focus on shared decision making and teamwork as well as on community building. They convey the sense of leadership to students by providing opportunities for each of them to assume leadership roles.
