Phage therapy is an innovative way to deliver bacteriophages-viruses that selectively attack harmful bacteria-directly to the lungs of older patients or patients with cystic fibrosis diagnosed with pneumonia. This delivery system, similar to a simple inhaler, allows inhalation of dry, porous microparticles coated with phages, light enough to be delivered deep into the lungs, that attack specific pathogens.

Pros identified in the research include the fact that this method does not harm the body's normal bacteria, nor does it contribute to multidrug resistance. Also, it can be used as a supplement to standard antibiotic therapy in patients with cystic fibrosis. A practical benefit includes the fact that no intravenous access is required, which can be challenging in the elderly population or chronically ill and comes with inherent risk of infection or infiltration. A second benefit of this delivery system, as opposed to I.V. therapy, is the potential for outpatient treatment, rather than hospitalization.

Negative aspects of this new therapy include the fact that they can create an immune system response and produce harmful toxins, they are grown in cultures containing the bacteria they attack and separation for purity can be difficult, and they are delivered via a biodegradable polymer, which is cleared by animals in a few days but it seems there would be potential for build-up with prolonged use or if not cleared equally by all patients. And, as with most new medications and therapies, it will likely be cost-prohibitive for many patients if it is eventually approved for use.

It is intriguing and encouraging to learn of this new potential therapy for the treatment of lung infections. In my opinion, the concept has potential and further research is warranted. It is a treatment option that I would like to see available, as a provider, to be able to offer alternative options to I.V. therapy with the added benefit of decreased drug resistance and sparing of the body's normal bacteria.

I have assembled a team of professionals who will complement one another in our effort to implement this new therapy. Alice, whose strength is achiever, has stamina and a hard-working nature that will help make our team more productive. Faith's strength is futuristic. Her vision will inspire not only our team, but those we wish to influence in adopting phage therapy. Pablo's top strength is positivity. He is upbeat with a contagious enthusiasm that will motivate our group and keep us excited about our mission to implement this therapy. Randall, whose strength is responsibility, is important to our team because he will execute what he says he will; he will be responsible and committed to our effort. Our last team member is Carter. His strength is communication, which is vital to any team. We will rely on his ability to put our collective thoughts into words and present our proposal to hospital administration.
