What is it about?

We want you to take pictures AND write short texts which represent a/o symbolize typical aspects of migration in Berlin Wedding – both positive and negative.

You could capture the bustling streets of Wedding, filled with the sights and sounds of different languages and traditions, document intimate moments within households, workplaces, and community spaces. It highlights the challenges faced by migrants as they navigate new environments, form connections, and find their place in a society often marked by change and adaptation.

What do you need to do?

Together with you group you find thrilling motives, take pictures and write short texts uploading them to the padlet ‘Images of Migration’. Your texts should explain the reasons for your choices and/or the symbolic meaning of your pictures.

o We meet in school (central yard) at 8am on Thursday (15/06/2023)

o Between 8.15 and 10.45 you will take pictures and begin writing accompanying texts

o Upload your pictures and the draft versions of your texts to our padlet

o We will meet again in school at 11.00am

o 11.30 to 1.00pm midday break at AMRIT (Oranienburger Str 45 10117 Berlin)

The flag is a combination of two different flags: the one of Germany and the one of the USA. Even though there are many interpretations for that we believe that It shows that people have different ancestors coming from different countries. They can consider themselves as people with two ethnicities.

The sight of a flag that combines the emblems of Germany and the United States serves as a powerful symbol of the fusion of these two nations and their shared immigrant heritage.

This flag has a connection to other topics as well like American dream. And a historical aspect is the separation of Germany in BRD and DDR which made many Americans come to BRD. This contributed to many Americans get the German citizenship.

The "KomPAD"

The "KomPAD" - (Kompetenznetzwerk Anti-Schwarzer Rassismus), translate: Competence Network for Anti-Racism against People of African Descent.
It is located in “Afrikanisches Viertel“ (en: African Quarter) (Togostraße) in Berlin Wedding. The quarter was intended to display black people from the German African colonies, but displaying then was never realized. In the 1990s, about 1’000 people from those colonies settled in this neighborhood. Since then they formed a the biggest African community in Berlin with the KomPAD as meeting point.

We think this fits our topic a lot because we talk about discrimination & racism in class (primarily POCs). For instance it can be an example of successful immigration & integration in Berlin and how to protect the community against discrimination without creating reverse-discrimination.

This picture depicts the engraving of the turkish words „Para Yok“ which translates to „No Money“. Being located in Badstraße, the quote represents the lack of money experienced by immigrants with turkish roots. Furthermore one can also conclude, that most of the turkish immigrants are uneducated, judging by the usage of turkish language. Because the environment is really poor, the usage of drugs is common, the kids with a low level of education and parents with immigration background are being forced into this position. It also represent the prejudices experienced by those with turkish roots which are generated by outer appearance. The message of the quotation could be, that turkish immigrants are being forced to live in a poor environment with prejudices which do not accumulate with the real shape of turkish culture in Germany.

The advertisement relates to our topic “Migration“, because it shows the conservative consequences migration could face, whether nationwide or continental. Illegal migration is problematic. Not only do affects countries where those immigrants try to migrate (e.g. in an environmental way or economical way), it also affects the immigrants itself, because of the risk to loose their life‘s. That makes those advertisements more important, to reach attention to this problem.

Here you can see that also other cultures migrate to Berlin, Wedding. This picture was taken in the Lessing Gymnasium, which is a school in Wedding with 70,2% of students of another heritage. The different cultures are used to each other and happily share a home. This fact proves the long standing diversity of Berlin.
