I have learned a lot things about identity so far like that your childhood really does affect who you are and who you become and what you believe in and that the things that are shown to you in your household as you are growing up affect your opinions on certain things. I have also learned that your identity is who you represent yourself as and who you want people to think you are. I also learned that a lot of people never really show their true identity to people only certain people get to see it or no one ever gets to see it and that some people hide it away on a daily basis and pretend to be someone they are not just so they don't get made fun of or judged for who they truly are. And one last thing that I learned is that identity is something that people struggle with a lot and trying to find their real selves and that sometimes it does take awhile for people to find their identity and accept who they really are.

I feel that it is impossible for us to work on our country getting better when there is so much hate and violence and anger in this country. We cant work on our country as a whole unless we fix or stop what is currently happening in it. So no i do not agree with what James Fallows is saying about America and the reinvention of it.

So i have moved around to different places in my life. I have lived in townhouses to apartments to a single family home where i live now. The way a neighborhood can impact the way you live is because it influences ho you re sometimes and changes you whether it be for the better or for the worse. Before when i lived in an apartment it wasn't that it wasn't a good area it was just while we lived there it stated transitioning into a not good place because crime started happening more and more around us and the people that were living in the apartments were doing illegal things but that is all we could afford so we had to live there for a little bit until we got some money to move. But i believe that has shaped me into who i am today because i know not to mess with all those illegal things because i have sen what can happen to you and the consequences of it. I now live in a single family home and i also believe that it has had a major influence on who i am too because it is my grandparents house but it is now ours and i have know the neighbors since i was little so it different living here because i have relationships with them and

"That the police departments of your country have been endowed with the authority to destroy your body. It does not matter if the destruction is the result of an unfortunate overreaction. It does not matter if it originates in a misunderstanding. It does not matter if the destruction springs from a foolish policy. Sell cigarettes without the proper authority and your body can be destroyed. Turn into a dark stairwell and your body can be destroyed. The destroyers will rarely be held accountable. Mostly they will receive pensions”(Coates).
I believe that at this point in time this quote is what america is right now. I think that within the recent years we have become more like what this quote says. There has been more police brutality that has happened and been shown in the media now more than it ever has and that nowadays this does happen the police hurt someone or kill them and most of the time they just get paid leave so even though they killed someone they just get told that they cant work for a certain period of time but they still get paid while that is happening.

Coates- “To be black in the Baltimore of my youth was to be naked before the elements of the world, before all the guns, fists, knives, crack, rape, and disease. The law did not protect us. And now, in your time, the law has become an excuse for stopping and frisking you, which is to say, for furthering the assault on your body. But a society that protects some people through a safety net of schools, government-backed home loans, and ancestral wealth but can protect you only with the club of criminal justice has either failed at enforcing its good intentions or succeeded at something much darker”(Coates).
Cullors - “The extraordinary presence of police in our communities, a result of a drug war aimed at us, despite our never using or selling drugs more than unpoliced white children, ensured that we all knew this. For us, law enforcement had nothing to do with protecting and serving, but controlling and containing the movement of children who had been labeled super- predators simply by virtue of who they were born to and where they were born, not because they were actually doing anything predatory”(Cullors 26).

I think that both of these quotes are very similar and that they are talking about
the same topic. They talk about how they both believe that the law enforcement in their neighborhoods were not there to serve and protect them but to control them and to accuse them of being criminals and that they made it seem like they were always up to no good and that they were going to cause problems

"State of Union" Considering the past week in America, 1) what do you consider to be the most toxic, immediate danger to America? 2) what is our biggest strength; what gives you hope?

I believe the most toxic immediate danger is guns. There are too many guns out there that are just passed from people to people and most of the people don't have licenses for them but some do but they are not mentally stable enough to own one which is probably what causes most of these mass shootings because people are sick and are mentally ill and they have breaks from reality maybe and they could go and do a mass shooting and then come back and no even know what they actually did. But i believe that it is too easy to just go and buy a gun and that there inst enough checking on someones mental stability and if it is safe for them to have gun. My biggest hope for america right now is that we have a lot of programs and organizations that are protesting for everyone to be treated equal and everyone having equal rights and all those types of topics and i believe that those organizations are really helping us move towards a better america where we can all live together in peace and accept everyone forwho they are.

Slavery was so long ago, Why don't people get over it?

Even though slavery was long time ago it was such a big part of the history of the world. And there is no way you could completely get over it because it will always be around and talked about and brought up because either people will be learning about it or being taught it and its good for people that don't know what is is or what really happened to see how the world was and how terrible of a thing it actually was. So i don't think people should move on because it was such a horrible thing that happened and people have to know about it in order to find ways to prevent it from happening again.
