1) Fostering "frequent and positive relationships among students who are different from one another" (Howe and Lisi, 2024, p. 235)

In a diverse classroom, students from different cultures may struggle to form meaningful relationships with their peers. Educators must foster these relationships and can do so by creating these relationships, then stepping back and letting the students do the work. Imagine a student is playing alone on the playground. This child's teacher can throw a ball back and forth with the child. Then, the teacher can invite another child to play. Slowly, the teacher backs out of this game and lets the students play together. This simple example can turn into a strategy to help students create and maintain relationships. Educators can implement time to discuss students' interests and cultures during activities like morning meetings. The teacher expresses their similarities with students from diverse cultures and teaches the other students to do the same. This creates links between students in the classroom and begins to build relationships outside of the classroom. By creating an environment in which students can share their differences and accept one another, teachers create a classroom environment in which students celebrate diversity.

To incorporate multiple perspectives into the curriculum, educators can expand on subjects by incorporating new perspectives. Sometimes, educators are given a curriculum they cannot drastically alter. To effectively incorporate diverse perspectives into this pre-planned curriculum, educators should add content and new perspectives. For example, when teaching students about Christopher Columbus, educators can teach about the effect his arrival had on Indigenous peoples. Students will learn to identify the struggles other cultures have experienced and gain insight into the diverse perspectives of others.

These strategies can also be used to meet the diverse needs of learners in a multicultural classroom. For example, some students from other cultures may not speak English but do not qualify for special education services. Educators use scaffolding strategies such as modeling and visual aids to teach these students the content. Also, students with diverse perspectives may not understand cultural norms. Scaffolding strategies such as gradual release of responsibility and chunking assignments can support these students as they learn the ways of an entirely new culture.

These workshops can act as a way to teach parents about the demographic population of the school and community, so they understand the importance of celebrating diversity.

To foster a multicultural classroom environment, educators must teach students to celebrate diversity and culture, not reject them. Teachers can have cultural celebrations in school and embrace students' specific cultural celebrations. Students must be taught to be respectful to one another, and can learn this at a young age through the constant celebration of diversity. Teachers should model kindness and inclusivity and teach students to adapt these traits. By celebrating culture and diversity at a young age, students will learn the importance of embracing our differences.

Educators can use community-based learning projects in class to foster engagement with families and community members. For example, students can choose a cultural celebration and research it through discussions with community members. They can enter the community and engage with adults and children from diverse cultures to research these cultural celebrations. This shows families and community members that not only do teachers want to maintain relationships, but they also want to foster these relationships between their students and the community. This act can encourage understanding between different groups of people and promote familial and community engagement in the educational process.
