They both have lived on the surface of the earth since the beginning of time. First chapter is just a little insight, the whole story, however, begins with the next chapter "Eleven years ago".  The events begin to unfold when Crawly had been given a baby - antichrist(1) and he have to bring it to the hospital and switch it, but the wrong baby ends up being switched and the antichrist is given to the wrong family. The next Crawly went to discuss ongoing things with Aziraphale, because Crawly is dissatisfied with his mission and really doesn't want the world to end. In between this storyline there are given glimpses of the four horseman of the apocalypse(2). The chapters meaning is actually in the title of the chapter, because this wrong baby is raised by this family thinking he's the antichrist for ten years and he's soon to turn 11, which is a meaningful turning point when he would have to chose the hellhound’s(3) name.

2. End of the world (that is why the battle would be in the first place);
3. Hell/heaven on earth (people are sometimes able to create hell or heaven on earth themselves. This is also mentioned in the second chapter, for me it just resonated);
4. Unexpected turnaround (the wrong baby);
5. Beginning of end (in the chapter events unfold around preparation of the world end, but the turning point of the wrong child will be just a beginning).

  • Crawly - a demon, who has once been an angel. He still has kind of two personality sides, he is a demon, but he is also genuinely enjoying the world and doesn't want it to end, he rather likes people;
  • Hastur & Ligur - demons, dukes of hell, who gave Crawly his mission to switch the babies; 
  • Sister Mary & sister Grace - nuns at the hospital, atheists;
  • Baby A - antichrist, who ends up with the wrong family (Mr. Young's family)
  • Baby B - other baby, who ends up with Dowling's family;
  • Anathema - practical occultist and professional descendant;
  • Newton - kid, whose mother thought he is a genius; 
  • Scarlet - a girl with the broken truck;
  • Sable - writer.

For instance, it shows when it comes to technologies (example: Newton thinks that future is all in the computers), cars (1926 Bentley) and also in language, there are used quite a lot atypical words for nowadays. In my view these little things really are the cherry on top and complete the big picture for the reader.
    Of course, the fiction characters, their abilities, for example, immortality, the way in which they integrate on earth and the way they are raised aren't real. And I cannot forget to mention the world end scenario.     • slyly (adverb) - in a cunning and deceitful or manipulative manner;
    • sombre (adjective) - having or conveying a feeling of deep seriousness and sadness;
    • nonchalant (adjective) - of a person or manner) feeling or appearing casually calm and relaxed; not displaying anxiety, interest, or enthusiasm;
    • exquisite (adjective) - extremely beautiful and delicate;
    • exuberant (adjective) - full of energy, excitement, and cheerfulness.
    I picked out mostly adjectives, because I've realised they're indeed helpful in essays and other writing tasks.

"They've got what we lack. They've got imagination." I chose this quote, because I related to it. In my opinion imagination and beliefs are a key to external conditions in one's life.
    2. "Hell is empty, and all the devils are here." I found this metaphor accurate too, because people really can be like devils, evil and forgotten about their humanity.
    3. "...they have more in common with their immediate opponents than their remote allies." I think this is a phrase everyone can learn from, because sometimes our enemies or opponents (not only people, but also emotions like fear) can teach the greatest lessons and highlight one's weaknesses to work on them.
    4. "A real feather in your wing." Just a great and corresponding metaphor to the story.
    5. "Anyway why're we talking about this good and evil? They're just names for sides. We know that."
