    الخيال الذي يتكون في المرايا المستوية هو خيال معتدل اي غير مقلوب بعكس المرايا الكروية التي تكون صور مقلوبة كما ان الصورة المكونة في المرايا المستوية هي صورة وهمية ومساوية لطول الجسم وكذلك فان بعد الجسم عن المرآة يساوي بعد الخيال في المرآة ولكن الصورة تكون مقلوبة جانبيا ولهذا تكتب كلمة سيارة اسعاف على مقدمة سيارات الأسعاف مقلوبة حتى يستطيع سائق السيارة التي امامها قراءتها بوضوح بواسطة المرآة المستوية فوق رأسه .
