What I think makes a great college essay is one that is not stifled by a prompt. It may be necessary to structure one's essay into a prompt later on, but a good suggestion is to write freely and choose a prompt after the essay is flowing. I will use this in my essay by writing about whatever I feel is important/of value for the essay, and then discover a prompt that harmonizes with what I have to say.
