The three salivary glands are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and the submandibular gland. The salivary glands help break down carbohydrates.

The mouth, located on the face, is the first place food enters for ingestion. It’s main functions are to mechanically breakdown food by chewing, cover food in saliva to assist chemical digestion, and to form the food into a bolus, which is latin for ball, hence why the bolus of food is a sphere.

Bile flows from the liver into the gallbladder for digestion. The bile is used to emulsify large lipid droplets and break them into smaller ones, allowing more surface area for enzymes. The gallbladder is a small pouch that sits below the liver. The gallbladder stores this bile until needed and then sends through the bile duct to the small intestine. When the gallbladder is full, it can reach the size of a small pear, and after meals, it gets deflated. The gallbladder helps break down fats and eliminate bile.
