Movie Review: The Freedom Writers Diary.

The film called “The Freedom Writers Diary” tells the story of Erin Gruwell and her journey as the new teacher of a teenager’s group from different nationalities at Wilson High School, in Long Beach, California. The events take place at a time when racial inequalities were more remarkable, and the fights between gangs were common and normalized. Therefore, most of the students there knew at least one person killed by the fight between them, and suffered of mental and behavioral problems due to the kind of life they had. Everything begun with the arrival of Erin to the institute, trying to create an atmosphere of solidarity among students and finding out the difficult learning progress they will have to go through. She persisted to devise alternatives in which students share their realities in a way that can help them both in writing through the diaries she gave them, and that way change the way they used to see life. They shared their experiences lived similarity with those of Anne Frank and in their daily situations. As the months went by, there was a noticeable improvement in the students' motivation and commitment to improve both in their private lives and in the classroom, getting inspiration from stories of overcoming adversities such as the Holocaust. Anne Frank's legacy in fighting for peace and equity was the engine that prompted Erin's students to change, so that one of their greatest wishes was to meet their hero, the secretary of Anne Frank's father "Miep Gies". Thanks to the effort of Ms. Erin and the student’s perseverance, they finally met her. She told them face to face how to fight the reality and use power to change for the better by doing something for others despite the circumstances, which was a great scene in the movie that marked a before and after. It should be noted that although the transition was difficult, the final goal was reached, which was to graduate. In addition to this, highlighting the stories of each character from the film, we have Miss Erin's life with marriage and at the fight for the love of her job, such as the impressive testimonials from Eva and Marcus. They were great characters, who despite their gray past, they managed to come out ahead making themselves and their families proud. Finally, the film conveys a great message which is linked to the power of change with positive actions in our lives, such as how great can be the love we give to others motivated by passion, such as that of a good educator in the case of Miss Erin.

Verónica Baca - 24152
Gleydi Espinoza - 24143
Jorge Caballero - 24081

Eva, Erin Gruwell, Miep Gies. These characters would be classified as one of the 3 most important characters in the movie in our opinion.
Eva plays a role in the movie, telling a story in how everything happened, a backstory on how life.
Erin Gruwell (Mrs. Gruwell) played the most important paper in the movie. She was the one who made everything happen, she motivated the students to learn, to enjoy and that things do not require violence.
Miep Gies, although she does not appear much in the movie, she become a hero for the young students, she taught that everyone can be a hero.
The Build-Up: This event would be when Mrs Gruwell met the students, there we saw the tense environment in the class between the different alumni.
Climax: This event would be in how the class went from fighting each other to supporting each other. Then, complications came and Mrs. Gruwell and the class were about to be separated.
Resolution: This event would be in how Mrs. Gruwell did everything in her power and went to the Board Of Education to try to change how things were and so she could stay with her students.
A scene we liked was when Eva told the truth in court, even though it meant betrayal for her own people, she did the right thing.
A scene we did not like was how Eva´s dad was incarcerated for a crime he did not commited.
The message of the movie is how one person can change people´s life.
We would give a 10 out a 10 because how inspiring this movie is, and how it is based in real life events makes it even better.

Alvaro Avila 24027
Gina Sabillon 24089
Guillermo Miranda 24185

2- The three main characters were Erin Grunwell, Eva Benitez and Scott Cassey.
Mrs. Grunwell was sweet, kind, but also determined in what she wanted to achieve. Eva was tough, most of the time angry and frustrated, but she believes in justice. Scott was Erin´s husbando, he was lovely, sometimes comprehensive but he used to felt unloved and made him a sad person.

3- Build up: Everything started when Mrs. Grunwell decided to work at the school and realized that her pupils were form different cultures. Some of them had troubles at home and also in class.

Climax: Eva saw one of her people killing someone innocent, also, in class most of the students didn´t get along with each other, but Mrs. Grunwell didn´t give up and tried as hard as possible to make them interact with each other.

Resolution: Mrs. Grunwell acomplisehd her objective, change the mental idea of social relationships along with their students and the people who surround them, also she gave them classes trough their senior year.

4- A scene from the movie that we liked was when the teacher took them to the museum to teach them about the holocaust and they liked it that much that they started to raise money to bring someone to teach them more about it.

5- A scene we didn’t like is the one where Eva has to run from her own family because she did what is correct

6- We think that the message from the story is that no matter where you come from and which are the difficulties that you have, you should always dream big and give the best of you because you can create your own opportunities.

7- 8/10 because we think it could have shown more of how each of the kids ended having success. In addition to that we didn’t like how the teacher´s husband didn’t support her.

8- -burden: a heavy load

You shouldn’t carry that burden alone.

     - Eviction: the action of expelling someone from a property

The officers come to evict them from their home

Maria Delattibodier 24107
Sofia Flores 24022
Ernesto Molina 24247
