She is using the dance to distract her husband from the letter he just received from Krogstad revealing her biggest secret, that she borrowed money from Krogstad illegally. The dance is described as "violent" by Helmer and he tries to change it, but Nora tries to tell him that it has to be that way. They also mention that Nora is dancing "as if it is a matter of life and death" to which she replies "It is! It is!" This of course has a double meaning because Nora means that it is life and death for HER because she wants to keep her husband from reading the letter, and she is also saying that the original purpose was to save peoples lives.
