This quote describes the murder of Beatty, the captain fireman that is with society. The two decide to read books and devise a plan to reintroduce literature to the people. Faber states "'Can't trust people, that's the dirty part. You and I and who else will set the fires?' (page 83). This is showing that Faber wants to help Montag set fire to the houses of the other firemen. He doesn't feel like he can trust anyone else to do it so he believes that he and Montag will have to do it themselves. This proves that he would set fire to someone's house in order to stand up for literature. In addition, Faber also devises a plan to listen to Beatty to determine whether or not he also reads books. He decides to give Montag an earpiece so when he speaks to Beatty, he can also listen in. This is said on page 87 when Faber says, "Go to the firehouse when it's time. I'll be with you. Let's listen to this Captain Beatty together. He could be one of us. This is proved (pg. 114) by Montag attempting to escape and becoming injured. The author states, "He felt it scrabble and seize his leg and stab the needle in for a moment before the fire snapped the Hound up in the air, burst its metal bones at the joints, and blew out its interior in a single flushing of red color like a skyrocket fastened to the street." The job of the Mechanical Hound is to hunt down fugitives and criminals that have tried to escape society. Up until Montag escaping, it has never failed to locate a fugitive.
