Listen to the story of an older person—a neighbor, a grandparent, or a family friend. What has happened in this person’s life? Look at the kinds of questions Maniac Magee asks Grayson. Make sure to listen carefully. Know when to encourage the per- son to continue talking. Make your older friend a book filled with his or her stories. Share your experience in a presentation with the class.

Maniac Magee would make a super play. Select your favorite group scene—the untying of the knot, the hitting of all the baseballs, the race with Mars Bar—that allows everyone in the group to play a part. Read over the scene together and decide what lines you will keep. Will you need to add any text to explain the action? Think about the action and how you will show it. After everyone in your group has a part, memorize your lines, practice, and then share it with the whole class. (Everyone in group must be done with the book and the questions at the end of your journal)

Make a board game called Maniac Magee. Use settings from the story for the places on the board. Create a variety of "good luck" and "bad luck" cards based on the incidents or characters from the book. Make the goal of the game to reach "home" or the Beale house.
