He describes it as "a place of wonders as well as of dangers," In it there were "shady canopies of the giants," and "fruit bearers," and it provided protection from invaders. However there were also "mountain lions that prowled on the other side of the arroyo,"  and "a five-foot rattlesnake [that] had been killed." That's kind of what the arroyo is for the people of Jalcoctán from Ernesto's perspective. A lot of chores and their survival were possible because of the arroyo. "Women of the village washed clothes," and it provided "agua zarca, good for drinking and washing,"and everything is referred to in how it's positioned with the arroyo and the forest. For example they say "bajar al agua," and "subir al monte," to find their way back home.
