The writer uses emotive language in order to have a bigger emotional impact on the audience by using emotive language feature such as ''were standing in a row like a frightened mice''. By saying this we get the concept that the children are small and frightened and the writer feels really sad for them. Also the writer describes, sadly, how the children were ''carrying their well worn sheets under their arms'' which gives us the picture that the prison might have not got the money to give more to those children, and they are affected by all that misery and hunger.

The writer uses a simile to describe the children in prisoner. He says, ‘they have been convicted and were standing in rows like frightened mice’’. This shows that the children are being compared to mice meaning that they are small and frightened, this makes us feel sorry for the children because they are so small in such a big environment. There is a theme of the children being ‘small, tiny and little’ throughout the extract which makes us feel hurt towards the children.

The writer uses a simile to describe just how scared the children in prison are. He says “standing in a row like frighten mice” the writer made this piece of written effective by making the reader feel like the children are frightened and scared just like how mice would be. It also gives us the impression that the children feel small in such a big place, he also continuously makes the children feel small and little by putting all the way through the extract. He also makes the reader sort of feel sorry for the children as they are so young and tiny but have been put in a massive place with people who are ten times bigger than them.
