He says, ‘they have been convicted and were standing in rows like frightened mice’’. This shows that the children are being compared to mice meaning that they are small and frightened, this makes us feel sorry for the children because they are so small in such a big environment. There is a theme of the children being ‘small, tiny and little’ throughout the extract which makes us feel hurt towards the children.
