The main setting of the story is a highly ordered and controlled community.

This community is isolated/ not connected to the outside world. The buildings and houses are all the same, without much personality or decor.

Technology is used a lot in this community, for things like transportation and communication. But people don't have much personal property or freedom to make individual choices.

The climate and weather are always mild and stable - no extreme temperatures or storms. This adds a sense of order and predictability to the community.

Everyone in the community has assigned tasks and roles. There is no diversity or difference between people: everyone lives in the same way, following the same rules.

In general, the decor is very uniform, structured and lacks individuality. This is intended to create a sense of identity and control.

This controlled and sterile environment contrasts greatly with the vivid and emotional memories that the main character, Jonas, begins to receive. This contrast helps drive the story's themes of freedom, humanity, and the value of individual experiences.

1.

“Mad World” by Gary Jules This haunting song captures the feelings of isolation and conformity in a dystopian society, much like the community depicted in “The Giver.

” 2.

“Where Is My Mind?” » by The Pixies The disorienting and questioning tone of this song fits well with protagonist Jonas’s journey to discover the truth about his seemingly perfect world.

3.

“Turn! Turn! Turn!” » by The Byrds This folk-rock song, adapted from a passage from the Bible, reflects the themes of cycles, change, and the individual’s relationship to society found in “The Giver.”
