Stands for United Nations Atomic Energy Commission. 

 

Background: 

Created by the UN general assembly ‘to deal with the problems raised by the discovery of atomic energy’. 

Aimed to exchange information (on atomic energy) between nations, limit atomic development, ensure use for peaceful purposes only, eliminate national threats due to its capacity of mass destruction. 

 

Tension Caused: 

In December 1946, the United States proposed its own detriment of atomic weaponry (the state was the only one to possess such an arsenal at the time) if every country agreed that the UN Security Council veto power would be void in policies regarding controlling atomic development in the future for peaceful use of this energy. Soviet Union rejected it, rendering the commission useless and its disbandment in 1952. 

Post-war Europe was in dire straits: Millions of its citizens had been killed or seriously wounded in World War II, as well as in related atrocities such as the Holocaust.The reconstruction coordinated under the Marshall Plan was formulated following a meeting of the participating European states in the latter half of 1947. The Marshall Plan provided aid to the recipients essentially on a per capita basis, with larger amounts given to major industrial powers, such as West Germany, France and Great Britain. This was based on the belief of Marshall and his advisors that recovery in these larger nations was essential to overall European recovery. 

Way it caused tension- 

The plan effectively taken control of much of central and eastern Europe and established its satellite republics as communist nations. The Marshall Plan is also considered a key catalyst for the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance between North American and European countries established in 1949.
