When students participate in read aloud to start the writing workshop they can become inspired for topics to write about from the reading. A fundamental part of including read aloud's in the writing process is that read aloud's tap into into students funds of knowledge and gives them a glimpse of some culturally relevant information in the classroom.

Mini Lesson- Mini lessons are incorporated into the writing workshop to teach writing skills such as punctuation, capitol letters, or conjunctions. The teacher models a skill to the whole class and each student works on the skill during individual writing time.

Writing time- Second grade students should ideally be writing 20-40 minutes everyday. Students can choose their topic which creates more of a desire to write for students if writing involves something they are passionate or interested about. Writing time can vary the type of writing. Some days students will write persuasive, fiction, nonfiction, or informative pieces.

Sharing- Sharing ones work promotes oral language development for students. When students share with their peers they are encouraged to form social bonds with one another. Students can also gain inspiration to continue their writing from other students. Writing helps develop reading skills such as recognizing common words and helping to sound words out.

Speaking: Students have a chance to share their writing pieces with other students in the class as well as the teacher. As they read aloud they are improving their speech. Grammar becomes more polished during the writing process and children notice and correct grammatical errors in written pieces which they can refer to for speech.

Listening: Students seek feedback from peers and teachers about their piece. They take recommendations into account and understand that others may have good ideas too through constructive criticism.

Writing: Teacher can use modeled writing to show students the thinking process while writing such as when to use capital letter, spelling difficult words and where to use punctuation. Students have a chance to create authentic writing that has meaning to them. They can write about their own interest and share their thoughts which makes writing an enjoyable activity. When students enjoy writing they will want to write more and improve.

Viewing: Students begin to look at things in more detail oriented and critical ways. They may choose to pay closer attention in order to better and more accurately represent their ideas in their writing.

Visually Representing: Students can use a variety of visual representations to accompany their writing pieces such as diagrams, photos, and drawings. Writing is a recursive process and this repetitiveness will encourage ELL's to master writing skills.
