in detail, in 1970, the Philippines had the highest proportion of urban residents, at just over 30%, and this figure rose sharply to around 50% by 1990. however, after that, the percentage declined slightly to about 40% in 2020 and is forecast to reach roughly 50% by 2040. the second highest percentage was recorded in Malaysia, which started at around 30% in 1970 and increased dramatically to nearly 75% in 2020. it is projected to hit a peak of over 80% by 2040
