Tenar was living in a place driven by ignorance. Ignorance of freedom, of light, of innocents, yet Tenar was able to break through this story that chained her up and bound her. She received paradise through finding herself again, and inturn found the things she was previously ignorant of. Because she has grown up being told this restrictive story, when she was free of her chains she did not know how to be without the comfort of being told how to be. Yes, she is free physically, but the break is not clean. She still struggles with the darkness of the thoughts told to her, bringing her back into the comforting darkness, the comforting ignorance. This struggle of breaking free from a single story is very much prevalent in modern life. The messiness, the urge to fall back into our old ways, the second guessing of all we have worked for, are very much evident in the real world. I would not say that this exploration of a single story is over simplified, yet I think that it is harder to break through the things we have been told in the real world. For one, most people don’t have someone like Ged, most people don’t have a guide. It is hard to realize you are trapped if that trap is all you’ve ever known. Most times, also, breaking free of stereotypes or stories does not lead us to change scenery like Tenar did. The changing of stories in our mind is much less definite: we don’t have the luxury of knowing when our mind is completely free of the things we have been trying to unlearn.

The labyrinth, for example, is a very good symbol of the navigation of identity that all adolescents go through. This imagery of long twisting walkways, that only you can navigate resembles the complicated finding out of intersections of identity. The use of this symbol, especially in a YA book, is extremely helpful to the young audience reading, showing that this confusion is normal and crucial. The motif of light and dark also translates to another facet of real life identity struggle. We all have light and dark within us, battling all of our lives; this interpretation of that struggle is, I will admit, on a larger scale than most people’s struggles, yet it still effectively shows us the human struggle of choosing.

Mostly the book has shown me that my experiences are normal and to be expected. I think that the navigation, the push and pull, of what you want to be, who you are, and what people want you to be can be very isolating, and this book normalizes it, at least a little bit. I feel that the fact that Tener is a mix of her past experiences, her darkness, and her current state, light, is also very relatable to me. The mixing of realities that make you whole can be confusing, and is expressed very well in this book.

When Tenar was finally able to leave the tombs she was able to experience the world outside of the tombs with Ged. They were able to spend time in the mountains, in a town, in the open sea, all things Arha had never seen and experienced before. This was a stark contrast from the dark, claustrophobic, and ancient tombs. But those tombs were all she ever knew. That was her life and that's where she thought she was meant to be. What she was meant to do. And now seeing this new and amazing world she was never able to see made her feel guilty for all of her past actions as Arha. This is shown by Arha requesting Get to drop her off on an island by herself to make up for her evil. But Ged tells her those were the doings of nameless ones. The evil. The dark. This tells us that when we are believed into a single story by others and by ourselves it’s hard to see anything else. And when we do we have regrets for having that single narrative .

What The Tombs Of Atuan shows us about life is that duality we have within ourselves. Like the yin and yang. Light and dark and finding a balance between the two opposite forces. This relates to who we are. I think the book tells us that we have to embrace both or all of our traits and personalities and come up with a balance within ourselves. And that balance could lead us to find and do something we are made for and something we love. But we have to find ourselves or we might need some to guide us. To help us find who we really are I think all of this is apparent with the light and dark motifs as well as the symbol of the lantern clouded. These symbols and motifs represent trying to find a balance between the light and dark and truly searching to find who we really are.

I don't think that Tenar regained paradise, I think that she gained her consciousness. She unlocked something she held repressed and embraced it. She hasn’t regained paradise because with the identity she has unlocked, it merged with arha, so she still carries arha’s weight to some extent and that is far from paradise. But I feel she’ll learn to embrace arha as she grows as tenar, and that will be when she can truly find paradise, if any. I think it tells us that there will always be hardships but when you get to the other side you could end up better than before.

I think that TOA offers insight into how our identities don’t always seem like they can peacefully exist, but our experiences can show us how they are not mutually exclusive, and how they also affect your experiences. I think this is most specifically demonstrated in chapter 9 when arha and ged are escaping and they leave the lantern behind but exit to post-arha tenar, and 11 where tenar calls her tendency to stay in the mountains childish.

This relates to me trying to find who I am and what my calling is. Sometimes I would surely know what I want to be when I grow up but I later scrap that idea and later think of something else. It's irritating thinking you would be something and then you mind changing. This kind of relates to Arha being forced to be something she didn’t want to be and then later being persuaded again to pursue something else when for your whole life you were this one thing. It was your one job. So the main theme that I think relates to me is finding who you are and what your calling is.
