In mid-August 1874, Stanley left Britain and arrived in Zanzibar off the east coast of Africa at the end of September. Now everything had to be made clear. Stanley bought rope, guns and ammunition and employed 356 porters. The many porters each had to be able to carry a good 30 kilos on their heads.

Many of the men died of unknown diseases.
