Her life consisted of daydreaming and standing aside as she watched life happen. Even in situations of a voice in need, she would remain silent and let others say what they had to say. Her thoughts and beliefs were never shared because she hadn’t quite built up the courage to speak up. As the book goes on and her life unfolds, she gradually gains more in the way of independence and she begins to play a role in her own life and in the life of others. As Walt Whitman mentions in his poem, O Me!
