The idea that food can shape how someone is and acts. For example, popeye uses spinach to get his strength to fight. In invisble man, the narrator felt like he had a new sense of meaning after he was able to find yams which was something that reminded him of the south.

The topic of identity and one's past is brought up again in this section, particularly while he is eating the yams. The yams bring him back to his childhood, and he reflects on how different he is now, and how much more of a true identity he has in comparison to when he was younger.

In a sense, the narrator's yams that he bought from the vendor are his Popeye's spinach. When the narrator eats the yam, he feels "an intense feeling of freedom" (258). The notion of the yam and feeling free gives the narrator strength and confidence, similar to how Popeye gains more of these characteristics when he eats spinach.

I think the narrator does reflect Popeye especially in this section because he's very short-tempered and feels superior to the people around him, similar to how Popeye was demanding of what he wanted.

The narrator doesn't rely on himself through most of the book due to his constant search for approval. After eating the yams he decides to start allowing himself to enjoy the things he likes which also allows him to start having his own self reliance.

The cartoon revolves around a lot of stereotypical connections to race. The Native are depicted in what white people believe to be traditional clothing, and leave little room for diversity. This is how much of American culture functioned in respects to recognizing other races.

The narrator's proud consumption of the yams indicates he is no longer ashamed of his southern heritage and instead chooses to embrace his past experiences. He no longer feels constrained by fitting into white people's conception of him as just another southern man, allowing him to better embrace his true thoughts and feelings with self assurance.

Relying on your culture as a source for strength. The yams reminded the narrator of his black and southern roots. Giving him strength to be a spokesperson in the North. This can be paralleled with Popeye's source of his girlfriend Olive Oil that gives hime strength to fight battles.

The cartoon has a lot of motifs of power and strength. During this period, white people were seen as the superior and stronger race, and colored people of color were looked down on. Popeye depicts the white supremacists at the time, while the colored folk represent the culture that was suppressed and beaten down.

The narrator eats yams happily, reflecting on how he used to be judged/ashamed for eating chitterlings or mustard beans when he was younger. Popeye eats spinach, allowing himself to feel confident and strong.
