Hampshire Healthy Families is a partnership between Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and Barnardo’s to deliver the healthy child programme across Hampshire.

We offer helpful, free advice and guidance for families with children aged 0 to 5 years old.

Get help to buy food and milk - The Healthy Start scheme

If you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under 4, you may be entitled to get help to buy healthy food and milk.

If you’re eligible, you’ll be sent a Healthy Start card with money on it that you can use in some UK shops. We’ll add your benefit onto this card every 4 weeks.

"I have been working for Hampshire Healthy Steps since August 2025.

I am a qualified nursery nurse. Before working for Barnardo’s, I have previously worked as a nanny and childminder in several nursery settings, at the Toy Library and Children’s Centre and for the local authority as an assistant family support worker.

I really enjoy supporting families, sharing my knowledge, and offering guidance to help the families reach their best outcomes.

In my spare time, I enjoy walking and spending time with my family and friends."

Why Healthy Steps exists

Barnardo’s and Hampshire County Council run the Hampshire Healthy Steps service to help families build healthier habits in response to rising local concerns about childhood obesity and low activity levels. The programme provides evidence based, family-focused support to improve nutrition, physical activity, sleep, oral health and overall wellbeing. Delivered by a dedicated family health coach in local community venues, the service aims to give children the tools to develop lifelong healthy routines and to offer flexible, practical guidance that strengthens family health and connects them to wider community support.

What do the Healthy Steps sessions cover?

Across 6 sessions, we look at:

Week One: Warm Welcome - Getting to know each other and what to expect.
Week Two: Eat Well and Healthy Teeth - Fussy and selective eating and how you can encourage children to clean their teeth.
Week Three: Cook Well and Sleep Well - Portion sizes, recipe ideas and supporting sleep.
Week Four: Get Active and My Community - How can we move more and what your community has to offer your family.
Week Five: Reflection - What’s going well and next steps.
Week Six: Follow up one-to-one phone call

Throughout the session, our Family Health Couches support you to set small, achievable goals.
