Listening to music: Children will listen to songs and identify the letters that they hear. The teacher will ask the students to listen for beginning sounds and ask the students to identify them.

Working with rhyming words: Students will listen to the teacher read words and they will say the words that they hear that rhyme with each other.

At home activity:

Magnetic letters: Parents will make words with the magnetic letters and ask the students to sound out the words. The parents will then ask the students to make their own words with the magnetic letters and students will tell the parents what the word they made is.

Reading poems: The teacher will read a poem to the students and ask the students to tell them what letters come together to make a word in the poem.

Rhyming words: The teacher will read a story and ask the students to listen for the words in the story that rhyme. The students will tell the teacher what words they heard rhyme and what words do not rhyme.

At home activity:

Making flashcards: Parents can make flashcards to show the students words that rhyme and increase their vocabulary. They can also incorporate sight words and other words in with the flash cards to help with the recognition of words.

Completing daily communication notebooks: Teachers will ask the students to complete a notebook daily of their communications. They can write down what they want to say or write a letter to someone to say something that they feel is important.

Reading a variety of books: Teachers will encourage the students to read a book daily for 15 minutes. This will help to enhance the students vocabulary.

At home activity:

Vocabulary bingo: Parents and students can play bingo made of vocabulary words that the students are working on or have worked on. This will enhance the students vocabulary.

Tape-assisted reading: This is where the teacher will play a tape that is reading a book to the students. The students will follow along and hear the words that are being read.

Partner reading: The teacher will pair the students in groups and each will take turns reading a book. Most times the teacher will ask the couples to read the book that they listened to in class to see how well they listened and what words they learned.

At home activity:

Echo reading: The parents read a line in a book and then have the student read the exact same line. They do this for the entire book. This is to ensure that the student is pronouncing the words correctly.

Online vocabulary quizzes: Teachers will assign quizzes online over the vocabulary words that students have been studying. This will help students with their technology usage and vocabulary comprehension.

Student friendly definitions: Teachers will make sure that the definitions are not too complicated for the students to understand.

At home activity:

Going on a "naming walk": Parents and students go on a walk and the students name the things that they see while walking with their parents. This can take place anywhere such as a walk around the neighborhood, a trip to the grocery store, or sitting on the porch looking at things outside.
