There are a few different things that can affect us physically that can get in the way of someone learning a new language.

Age: One who is younger has an easier chance to learn a language because our brains are a lot more malleable at a younger age therefore can absorb more information.

Hearing or Visual Impairments: When someone is dealing with visual or hearing impairment it can drastically alter their abilities to learn a language.

Anxiety: If a child is overwhelmed or stressed about learning a language, it can actually interfere with their ability to learn.

Motivation: When a child does not have the desire or motivation to learn a language or anything else for that matter, they will not put in the effort to be successful. You can encourage them as much as you can but ultimately it comes down to them to want to learn.

Attitude: A child's attitude can make or break their ability to be successful. If they are negative about the process and their progress of learning then they will more than likely not be as successful. But if they are positive and willing then they have a better chance to be successful.

Anxiety: If a child is struggling with anxiety about their learning or anything else then this will negatively impact their learning because they will be distracted or worried about how they are doing or if they're going to mess up.

Confidence: Going hand and hand with anxiety, it is so important that people feel confident in themselves and their abilities. They can be so successful if they have faith in themselves. When they are not they may become nervous or too shy to try and participate.

Sociocultural factors come down to a few main things: Cultural background, how old they are, where they may be coming from and where they are moving to, as well as economic status. These four main factors play into how they may be successful in learning a language, particularly a second language. If a student comes from a background where women do not get the same type of help or participation as the men, they may feel less inclined to speak up and participate. In addition some may have the funds to recieve extra help and tutoring while others may not have the financials to do so.

School Culture: When schools are open and willing to teach students who are learning a new language who come from a different country and may only speak a different language, they can be more successful. But at times there can be schools where they are not as open and willing to teach those who do not speak English.

Language Ability: When students speak languages that educators are not familiar with like Arabic, they can have more of a challenge adapting and trying to teach these new students.

Learning a new language when you already speak another can hinder your learning of something new. When you are learning a whole new language it can be difficult to achieve the tenses, syntax, grammar, and so on. The previous knowledge of the other language can get in the way of what you are trying to learn.

Cognitive factors play a large role in langauge acquisition.

Memory, attention, and problem solving skills are at risk when a child does not know the language. They are not progressing cognitively if they are not understanding what is spoken to them. Cognitive factors describe how we think abstractly and problem solve.

Memory: How well we remember and retain the information will have an effect on how quickly we learn a language.

Attention: In order to learn a new language and be successful we need to be able to pay attention to what is being said.

Problem Solving: Problem solving skills can help us in learning a language because we can use them to decifer what is being said and what things mean based on context clues.
