American Temperance Society 1826

Many Americans encouraged others to limit the amount of alcohol they drank. The goal was for people to not drink as much rather than completely stop drinking. This was the first alcohol temperance movement in the United States. The Temperance Society occurred due to the Second Great Awakening, which inspired Americans to better themselves. With all of the positivity the Second Great Awakening was creating, Americans wanted to better themselves and families when it came to alcohol consumption. People of the U.S. were improved due to the Temperance Society, and the ATS was spread across America. There were less drunks, and families had more money, because they were not spending as much money on alcohol. Women were big advocates for the society because they wanted their husbands to stop drinking. This society helped American society, but in the end, Americans could not resist the alcohol and began drinking like they did before.

Women’s Rights Convention 1848

In Seneca Falls, New York the Women’s Rights Convention was held for women try and convince people that they deserved equal rights to men. Elizabeth Candy Stanton read a “Declaration of Sentiments” preaching that all men and women were equal. Very slowly, society began to allow women to have few rights such as going to college, and a couple states allowed wives to own property after marriage. This convention opened the eyes of other women and made them want to fight for their deserved rights, which lead to the beginning of the Women’s Rights Movement. Without the Convention, women might not have gained the confidence to fight for themselves. The culture of American women drastically changed due to this event even though it took nearly 100 years. Women were no longer apart of the cult of domesticity, and very slowly became more prominent in society. The Second Great Awakening inspired this convention and uprising of women’s rights. It brought faith into women to make them believe they could gain equality no matter how long it took.

This was a reaction to deism and unitarianism that led to a great religious and cultural revival. People believed they could choose their own destiny and save their souls by their actions rather than the previously believed predestination. Preachers held mass gatherings where those who attended were saved. This event inspired all of the other reforms that constituted the 1800s because of the call for change and revival of society.

After the War of 1812, America experienced a strong sense of nationalism and continued to grow and develop into a stronger nation because of this sense of unity. However, sectionalism did arise, dividing the country over debates regarding internal improvements and slavery, so “good feelings” can be misleading. This title more refers to the fact that there is only one political party with James Monroe, a Republican.

In the mid 1800s, American shipping reached its “golden age” -- sheeny new ships, known as clipper ships, were long and narrow and majestic. These helped to advance trades by being high-speed, making the United States beat the British is trade races and brought thousands of travelers to California and Australia. The navigation of water and use of ships, including the attempts to make bigger and better and faster ships, incorporated itself into the country’s culture and society. The newly-formed ships contributed to the advanced transportation that was a part of the Transportation Revolution, which helped further America’s world of a temperance society and the advancement of religious events like the ones found in the Second Great Awakening.

Starting in the 1830s following West-movement desires, roads and canals became plentiful out of the East, making inland transport easily navigable. The government was beneficial in helping these means of transportation come to fruition, and this revolution stimulated trade and powered economic growth. Transportation and the movement of people and things started to become a larger and larger part of the culture and society of the United States. This newly-formed advanced transportation allowed for the movement of alcohol on a larger scale, related to the recently-mentioned Temperance Society, as well as aloning religious worshippers to gather easily, as was the case in the Second Great Awakening, noted earlier.
