Hello everyone and welcome to the Bayswater Animal Cruelty Awareness fete, thank you for coming along and supporting the event. My name is Matthew and I am one of the volunteers for today. You can find us as we’re wearing these uniforms with this logo. We will be here all day so feel free to approach us if you need help or want to ask us any questions. Our aim today is to help inform you of some of the unethical practices that a lot of domestic animals are faced with, and to help you understand what actions you can take to prevent these unethical treatments from happening.

So today quite a few interesting things are going to be happening, all of which you can get involved in. We’ve got lots of stalls set up for you to have some fun with, and we’ll be showcasing the artworks that were so kindly submitted by the community. The artworks will be on display all day for you to look at. At the end of the day we will hold a contest for the best artworks, judged by our very own Olivia, and give prizes to the winners. Prices are displayed next to each artwork if you wish to buy one for yourself and all of the proceeds made go towards the RSPCA.

The stalls we have set up have some fantastic stuff going on so I do recommend you check them all out. We have some from the RSPCA themselves, some about rescue animal adoption if you are interested in how to go about adopting a rescue animal. There are many informative ones with petitions to sign and other community activities you can get involved with. We’ve got some special guests here as well (gesture Seeing Eye Dogs) who have been brought along by Seeing Eye Dogs Australia. If you want to learn more about seeing eye dogs, how they’re trained, how you can help, then stop by these guys and have a chat.

The stalls will be open until 4pm and the seeing eye dogs will be here until 2pm. We will be judging the artworks at 3 o’ clock.

We hope you have a wonderful day today. Take the time to visit each of the stalls and talk to each other about your own experiences. There are lots of ways to take action against animal cruelty today so feel free to explore the fete and see what kinds of things you can do. Just a reminder that everyone wearing this uniform (gesture to own shirt) is a volunteer for today and we are happy to assist you with any queries or questions you have. Have a wonderful day everybody and don’t forget to have a look at the lovely community-submitted artwork on display.

Discipline: Creative writing/Professional writing.

As I am both a creative and professional writer my style of writing can be adapted for most of the writing roles in this project. However, I have focussed more on the creative writing discipline for this project.

One of my roles in this project is to write the more creative advertisements (as opposed to media releases). Within these advertisements I will apply my understanding of rhetoric in order to guide and convince people viewing the advert to attend the fete. Due to this, it is important for me to effectively communicate to the audience as my words may mean whether or not they decide to show up.
It is vital for my words to contain all the relevant information about the fete, but in as simple terms as possible. In the sample advert I have chosen specific words that I believe would have a stronger impact on the person reading them.

I will also be responsible for writing the speeches that will be given on the day. These are important for similar reasons as the advertisements. The opening speech will effectively set the mood for the fete so I’ve decided to write it in a more casual manner so to comfort the audience. This speech needs to address all the basic functions of the fete and explain to the audience what they can do at this event and how they can go about doing it. The effectiveness of the speech(es) will help determine how organised the event will be.

You are listening to Curtin podcast: episode 13. So let’s get started. (Intro Music break 2-3 seconds). Hey, everybody. I’m Ernest here. Welcome back to this podcast make sure you tuning in every time. You can also follow me on Instagram and Facebook. Now, let’s get into the show. This week we have a special guest here, Matthew, representative of Bayswater Animal Cruelty Awareness to talk about an event held on 17 December.

E: Hi Matthew

M: HI Ernest, thanks for having me.

E: Can you please tell the audience what is Bayswater Animal Cruelty Awareness all about? And what it’s albout?

M: Bayswater Animal Cruelty Awareness will be held in Bayswater Park Gardens in order to raise awareness of domestic animal abuse and help stop the cruelty in the society and fundraise and donate to Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In the event, we’ll ask the community to submit their art work of animals and we’ll judge and of course the winner get the prizes. But if anyone wants to buy the artwork, the donations will go straight to RSPCA.

E: That’s great but before that, what is animal cruelty?

M: According to RSPCA, Animal cruelty can take many different forms. It includes overt and intentional acts of violence towards animals, but it also includes animal neglect or the failure to provide for the welfare of an animal under one’s control. In addition to this, it is important to remember animal cruelty is not restricted to cases involving physical harm. Causing animals psychological harm in the form of distress, torment or terror may also constitute animal cruelty. ( FROM RSPCA)

E:Oh wow, that’s why we have to join this wonderful event to save all the beloved animals. But before the end of the podcast, can you tell us some details of Bayswater Animal Cruelty Awareness? how to join this meaningful event?

M: Sure, this event will be held on Saturday 17 December at 9.30am to 4pm in Bayswater Park Gardens.

E.

Conducting research is the best possible way to successfully analyze and understand how to tackle a logo design. By seeing what similar designs are already out there, i am able to deconstruct both successful and unsuccessful elements, which then allows me to know what works effectively and what doesn't.

The most effective logo designs regarding animal awareness incorporate both logotype and an illustrative graphic. The illustrative graphic acts as the main focal point of the logo, and typically consists of an animal(s) or something that can be linked back to animal behavior / nature / features (such as a paw, bone or barn)

Bright colours are usually used to attract attention. Being a community fair, its probably best to utilize bright colours in order to emphasize the positive impact that the event wishes to make.

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=animal+awareness+logo&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=974&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwimrNvJoIvQAhUBHJQKHeCfCBUQ_AUIBigB

https://au.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=animal%20awareness%20logo&rs=typed&term_meta[]=animal%7Ctyped&term_meta[]=awareness%7Ctyped&term_meta[]=logo%7Ctyped

The Coalition for Animals and Seer Farms ran a fundraiser in 2011, it consisted of various events such as wine tastings, pet photography, dog walks, and many other types of ways to raise money. All proceeds went to animal based charities and the aim was to 'Give those without a voice, a voice'.

As for the design aspect of this particular project, i have to say it could probably use a lot more refinement. Although the event is for a great cause, the design elements look too poorly constructed, and look like they have been designed in Microsoft word. This runs the risk of the event looking too small and unimportant.

For this particular project, i aim to incorporate aesthetic and appealing designs throughout all applications, to try an attract the most people to the event as possible.

http://seerfarms.org/documents/CFAFundraiserFlyer2011.pdf

http://www.coalitionforanimals.org/

The choice of font in any branding project is absolutely pivotal in whether or not the overall design is successful and appealing. The chosen typeface must compliment the theme of the event, and evoke the necessary tone.

For this particular project, a balance between serious modern and 'laid back' is desired. I have included some initial rough experimentation that i conducted in order to choose the right font for the event.
Mitchell Dunn- Location & Layout

-Mitchell Dunn

Discipline: Geography

Task- Location/Layout

My role for this task was to find a suitable location and design an appropriate layout for the fete. I must take into the consideration the impacts hosting a fete will have on the surrounding environments and ecosystems within the chosen parklands. The effect of a sudden influx of people and animals would have. Such as amount of rubbish left and damage to grasslands and shrubbery. Once a suitable location was decided and finalised it will be my role to organise the layout and geographical orientation of the fete; what things will go where, number of entry/exit points, parking facilities, accessibility, and fencing.

Choosing an appropriate site to held an event which boasts the interaction between people and animals can be tricky. I started to search through popular parkland/recreational spaces in Perth that would be ideal. Myself along with the other group members came up with numerous possible places including Kings Park, South Perth, Burswood and Bayswater. I decided on Bayswater because of its location, accessibility and size. It is easily accessible from most parts of Perth and the park boasted a vibrant community atmosphere. I wanted to the fete to be close to access roads and have plenty of parking. This lead me to finalise the exact area is the adjacent grassland to the Wright Crescent Carpark, which is situated roughly in the middle of the parkland (see image).

After the location was finalised, the second part of my role would be to design a functional and suitable layout for the fete. Because this fete will not be taking up the whole grassland fences will be needed for the border. This will also help keep the animals inside and unwanted guests out. Inside the fete will be a bunch of scattered stalls some displaying artwork, others will be dedicated to specific organisations such as the RSPCA and Guide Dogs. There will also be a food stall to cater for everyone including vegetarians. There will be two entry/exit points at opposite ends of the fete each will gold coin donation collection buckets. Some stalls will also have roofs, to allow for all weather conditions. (see image for further details).

Role of the Researcher

Brief Introduction

My name is Emily Rampellini and I am majoring in both Professional Writing and Publishing as well as History. The discipline I have chosen to use for this project is history as I have used my skills as a researcher into doing the primary research which would be used for the educational side of the festival for the stalls which both raise awareness for the cause and give information for the fair goers.

EXAMPLES OF NEWSREPORTS

News reports help give the audience an idea of what the issue is about and provides of examples of what’s being done. My plan for these newspaper articles would be to pin them up on a pin up board on the back of some of these stalls. As a researcher it's my job to find appropriate articles that both enlighten the audience and are family friendly as well as some small children may view them

FOSTER OWNERS STALL

The main purpose of this stall is to provide the fete goers with information on how they can get involved with fostering dogs and how they can go about with that process. In my role of researcher I looked at, taking our sponsors into account, the RSPCA and Swan Animal Haven’s processes into adopting animals

RSPCA

Adopting a Puppy/Dog

Selecting a Dog

Before selecting a dog, pet owners must keep in mind the incredible responsibility of owning a dog and this includes finding a dog which suits your current lifestyle. For example if you don’t have a big backyard you might want to choose a dog which reflects that. Consider adopting a dog from the RSPCA or a similar animal rescue shelter (it might also be useful to look at the Smart Buyers Puppy Guide which applies to buying any kind of dog whether it has a pedigree or not). Buyers are also recommended to visit where your puppy was bred and ask questions on the background. The RSPCA recommends not buying a dog on an impulse as they are a big responsibility, not buying a dog without first discussing the background, discriminating against breeds as all dogs make excellent pets and refrain from buying a dog over the internet, newspaper articles or pet shops without looking at the breeding facility.

Adoption Process

Above anything else the RSPCA is dedicated to understanding the needs of the dogs and suiting that dog with the perfect family. Once you have found that special dog an attendant will talk to you about the needs and responsibilities for caring for that dog. It is encouraged you bring pictures of your home and backyard so they can gain a better understanding of what environment your dog will be brought into. If you have any other pets the RSPCA are happy to arrange a meeting with other pets and family members to see how well they get along with each other. The shelter will also require a filled-out application form and if you feel that this is becoming too much then there is a 24-hour cooling off period when you can make sure you have made the right decision.

Your New Dog

When bringing your new dog home make sure all of your family members are happy with the new addition. Training benefits everyone in the family and is offered at the RSPCA, it is highly recommended that you enroll into puppy training so that the puppy is properly trained and makes it an easier transition into the family.

Adopting a Kitten/Cat

Selecting a Kitten/Cat

When selecting a new kitten or cat for your home please consider starting your choice at the RSPCA where they have a wide variety of cats to choose from. If you do not find a cat which suits your family, you may consider choosing a breeder which can be a tricky thing. The RSPCA suggests that pet owners must keep in mind the incredible responsibility of owning a dog and this includes finding a kitten or cat which suits your current lifestyle. Buyers are also recommended to visit where your kitten or cat was bred and ask questions on the background. The RSPCA recommends not buying a kitten or cat on an impulse as they are a responsibility to the owners, not buying a dog without first discussing the background, discriminating against breeds as all cats make excellent pets and refrain from buying a cat over the internet, newspaper articles or pet shops without looking at the breeding facility.

Adoption Process

Above anything else the RSPCA is dedicated to understanding the needs of the cats and suiting that cat with the perfect family. Once you have found that special cat an attendant will talk to you about the needs and responsibilities for caring for that cat. It is encouraged you bring pictures of your home and backyard so they can gain a better understanding of what environment your cat will be brought into. If you have any other pets the RSPCA are happy to arrange a meeting with other pets and family members to see how well they get along with each other. The RSPCA suggest to all new cat oweners they keep their cat to their property from dawn till dusk at a minimum as this will protect the cat from fights and preserve the wildlife. The shelter will also require a filled-out application form and if you feel that this is becoming too much then there is a 24-hour cooling off period when you can make sure you have made the right decision.

Your New Cat

When bringing your new cat, home make sure all of your family members are happy with the new addition. While cats seem to be very self-sufficient remember that they still require our love and care.

Adopting Small Animals

When buying a pet rabbit, guinea pig, ferret, bird, rat or mouse it is important to remember that these animals require daily attention and care. It is important that children experience owning a pet and remembering how much responsibility even small creatures could be. Parents are to remember that they may possibly be looking after this animal as well as their children and that they are required to taking certain duties on board.

Pet Insurance

Pets can be injured just as much as humans and some vet bills can be quite high up in price so it is recommended you consider having pet insurance as this will aid your expenses in the future for your pet.

Swan Animal Haven

Sponsor a Dog

For those who can’t take care of a dog full time a special feature done by the Swan Animal Haven is that of sponsoring a dog. For $5 a fortnight you will be sent a picture of that dog that you sponsored. You can even come in and walk your dog and bring him or her as many treats as you like. If you would like to sponsor a dog please feel free to drop into the haven any time between 11AM-3PM on any day of the week except Monday.

GUIDE DOGS

This stall is designed to raise awareness about guide dogs in Australia and what Guide Dogs Australia, another one of our sponsors, do for those who need guide dogs, the training the dogs go through and provide links of the application links required if you or someone you know who needs a guide dog.

Puppy Raising

As soon as they can walk puppies undergo training learning simple commands such as sit, stay and drop as well as socialising with other puppies although they spend a lot of their early time sleeping and playing. At 8 weeks they are picked up by their volunteer Puppy Raisers who will live with them for 12 months

Guide Dog Training

At 14 months, the dogs are ready to say goodbye to their puppy raising families and commence real training. After each dog are assessed on health and temperature and tested on what they have learned so far then the suitable dogs begin 20 weeks of training with their new instructor whose job is to build confidence and consistency amoung the dogs who are taught a range of skills and how to manage distractions as they visit busy and nosier places.

Graduation

After 20 weeks of intensive training the dogs undertake their final challenges, they are tested on their ability to avoid distractions (food, noise, traffic etc), navigate obstacles, travel on public transport and find landmarks (bus stops) and cross the road safely. Every dog and handler is assessed on personality, lifestyle and physical traits.

Working Together

The Guide Dog team must now build trust and develop with each other as working together takes a lot of effort and trust on both parties. The Guide Dogs start off very light and basic slowly moving into more complex situations.

Graduation

It is now time for the dog to retire after having done 9,000km over 8-10 years. The handler has the option of keeping their retired Guide Dog as a pet or allowing it to be rehomed to a new family.

Greyhound Cruelty

This stall is a reminder of the animal abuse that is currently going along around the world. Greyhound fighting is a very real and scary issue and is most of the time locked behind closed doors. As a researcher, it was my job to dig deeper into greyhound abuse and figure out what it is all about.

Greyhound Cruelty is amongst some of the most brutal animal abuse you could find. It is broken down into two main types of abuse: the abuse shown to the ‘live bait’ and the abuse shown to the actual greyhounds. Piglet, rabbits and native possums are all apart of the abuse- tied to lures and hurtling around the racetracks at a very fast pace and then mauled to death. For those who survive their first attack were ‘re-used’ multiple times.

The Greyhounds themselves who are usually quite gentle dogs are kept in very inhumane living conditions off the track. Live baiters are incised to chase, attack and kill small animals or they may be killed themselves if they do not perform. Some 18,000 greyhounds have been killed every year who are deemed unworthy to win the races.

References

• Butterly, Nick. 2016. “Animal Rights Group Claims WA Animals ‘Brutalised’”.
