In the chapter of “A House on the Hill” it focuses on Isla’s family and them discovering their new home. Repetition Is used by saying “We will be happy here”. There is a use of Polysyndeton when Isla is describing her family by saying “My Brother and Me and Mum and our new cat, Molly” this technique Is used as it make the reader feel like their family has gotten bigger as they start a new chapter of their lives in their new house. There is also a use of contrast by Isla thinking that “maybe things would be different now”, the use of this technique is contrasting previous emotions shown and thought in previous chapters. In this Chapter the characters we hear from are Isla’s Brother, Isla’s Mother and their new family Cat, Molly. At the start of this chapter they go for a drive to the top of the mountain in the new car, it was a small car could only just fit the three of them, but they made it work. This was exciting for them as they hadn’t owned a car in all the time they lived in Hobart. As we go through the chapter Isla talks about her time travelling to the top of the mountain with school. There is a clear juxtaposition in the pathetic fallacy here with the weather and the mood. They had a great time jumping down down into crevices and making there way through the maze of rocks. In the last paragraph Isla describes the mountain and its beauty but they talks about having its own personality saying ' it could disappear whenever it felt like it.

1.) The chapter is based on two very distinct ways to prepare a cup of coffee; however, what does the banter between Bo and Isla’s mother reveal about their relationship? 

The banter between Isla’s Mother and Bo revels that there relationship with each other is very close. We are also told that “he { Bo } put his arm around her [ Isla’s Mother ], leant his head down to the side so that it was resting on hers.” This physical action supports the idea that Bo and Isla’s mother are very close with each other.
The dialogue between these characters is friendly. Parrett wants the reader to recognise the love which exists under the friendly rivalry about which style of coffee is best, “put his arm around her, leant his head down to the side so that it was resting on hers.” This gesture symbolises the unity that these characters feel for one another


2.) How do you think Isla feels as she witnesses the love which exists between Bo and her mother? 

I think that Isla feels quite jealous about the love seen and shown between Bo and her mother as we have gathered the idea that Isla quite fancies Bo.
In Chapter 15 based on a phone call between Isla and her Dad, Parrett suggests that the narrator is not close to him. Consequently, I think she would welcome the intimacy displayed between Bo and her mother in Chapter 21, especially as previous chapters, especially Chapter 22, have indicated that Isla enjoys spending time with Bo and may regard him perhaps as a father-figure

1.) How much money did Isla’s mother receive from her divorce settlement?

Just over $53,000 

2.) List the items or events which Isla is excited about and explain their significance. 


Having a room of her own that is closer to the sun and the light - that is is not cold and dark like her other rooms that she has had before. 

Having no lodgers - that they can have a house that is just theirs and don’t have to share or worry about anyone else. 

New furniture - brand new furniture that was thought to make them happy, giving them a new start.
Starting a new school - that everything will be different 

 A new car - going back to what they haven’t had for a long time, Bringing back memories 

New rooms - never had a room just to themselves 
Having a birthday party - first real party, in a house that they owned shows significance that they have achieved goals.

The new house provides a stable home base; it is far more spacious than their previous rental accommodation, as each child now has a bedroom. In the chapter of “This is Coffee” we see a clear interaction happen between Bo and Isla’s Mum. The whole chapter is about the two different preference of coffee liked and the banter that comes around with it due to the disagreements of the two main characters talked about in this chapter. Through the joking disagreements talked about in this chapter we start to see the reveal of how close of a relationship Bo and Isla’s mum have.  The setting of place in this chapter is based at Isla’s new home. Whilst Isla’s mum and Bo are discussing their different coffee opinions Isla’s Mum “heaped a teaspoon of the dry brown granules into her little teacup”. The use of adjectives is used to help create a strong sense of imagery for the readers. Isla described the coffee of having a certain smell which she describes as “something rich and earth and strong” the use of Polysyndeton and imagery give the readers a sense of olfactory.

 Bo has won the trust of Isla’s mother but that does not guarantee Isla is supportive. However, his willingness to cook for the family indicates that he cares for their wellbeing. Added to that,  his exploration of the mountain is significant. When Peter and his mother return to the car because they are cold, Bo remains with Isla. He chats with her in an open respectful way, sharing humorous anecdotes about life in Denmark and he also clambers with her over the mountain’s craggy rocks.
