Unity & Leadership Inititiatives in Schools by

Hi Amazing Humans! Let me start by saying your helpful response will get you one of my sticker packs that I have made as an incentive for this! With that being said... This year I am looking into new opportunities to promote unity and leadership within our schools, cluster, and long term goal...county. I would love to hear some ideas of how you have seen unity and/or leadership being implemented where you are currently or in a previous location that you have taught at. These ideas can include school initiatives and/or cluster initiatives. My hope is that these responses not only support my goals in promoting unity and leadership but others as well across our county and beyond! These initiatives can promote unity with students, staff, parents/guardians, or a mix. We can do so much TOGETHER so I truly appreciate your support in helping me see the amazing things that you have been a part or seen in your current school or a previous school! Thank you for your continued support with all of my goals! I appreciate you! :) (Don't forget to leave your name and school so I can send your stickers!)

One of the things Trip did this year was "friendship Fridays" where an older grade would hang out with a younger, like my kinders hung with a 4th grade class. The little ones really looked forward to it, and the 4th graders took charge of the activities and really seemed to like the "babies" 🩵

In the Peachtree Ridge cluster, we have amazing turn outs for Trunk or Treat. Each elementary school and middle school were represented with their own station. Jackson ES had their principal there manning their station along with other staff. We also have the middle school orchestra come play at the elementary schools a few times a year. The senior walks at the end of the year at the students respective elementary schools are another way we show unity. I would love to see more attendance from the elementary school kids at the high school sports and arts programs. (Stacey Ro-Mason Elementary)

Hey there! At Baggett we have a program called Baggett Ambassadors where our Multilingual students (grades 2-5) get a chance to be leaders. As we receive new students their job (Baggett Ambassadors) is to provide them a pamphlet in the new students home language as well as take them on a tour around the school. We are promoting diversity as well as making sure new students feel welcome regardless of background. We will meet with them throughout the year to teach leadership skills and put what they have learned into action 🙂

Winn Holt does several things to promote unity & leadership within our school & cluster.

We have a Mentor Program for new teachers. Each new teacher receives a veteran teacher as a mentor for support throughout the school year. Regular meetings are held & new teachers are also given the opportunity to visit classrooms & observe veteran teachers in action.

Next, we have a “Welcome Angel” Program in which each new staff member/teacher is assigned a “secret” staff member/teacher. The angels are provided with a list of their person’s favorite things & then we provide support at least once a month throughout the school year with snacks, notes, small gifts, etc. The “Welcome Angels” are revealed at the end of the school year.

In addition, we have a Mentor Program for select students in which the high school students from our cluster come to our school & work with, read to & provide support as needed. Students love having older role models to look up to!

Finally, we have a Fifth Grade Parade/Walk at the end of the school year. Staff members, students & teachers line the hallways as we honor & “send off” our fifth grade students & wish them luck as they transition to middle school in the fall. Former students who once attended Winn Holt & are graduating seniors also walk in the parade. This year, staff members/teachers who earned a degree of some sort were also recognized & wore caps & gowns & walked in the parade as well!

These are just a few of the many ways Winn Holt promotes unity & leadership within our school & cluster.

At Trip, we have a leadership program where coaches from the county come and teach and train us up. It’s optional, sometimes admin recommended, and meets once a month. I had the privilege of being a member of it this past year and learned so much that I hope to bring into this new school year.

We also do the mentor(veteran teachers) / mentee (new to teaching and/or new to Trip) program. I think it’s a great way to connect newcomers and support their learning and community at our school.

Last, we have Vertical Cluster meetings. 2 teachers, and an AP, and the Principal from each of the cluster schools meet with coaches from the county at one of the schools every other month and connect, discuss, and communicate all kinds of things - from leadership roles, to CLT processes, to grading policies, to LSPI and school goals, to community, and so much more! I was so grateful that I got to be a part of this team. It is so great to see and hear all the wonderful things happening in our Ram cluster!

I am a proud Ram! #fRAMily

We have a buddy system where a teacher is paired with a struggling student. They check in with them and act as a mentor/safe space for that child and help with relationship building. It’s called “Corley Cares”.

Corley Elementary

At Jenkins we have a Check-in/Check-Out system that is created between a teacher & a student (one who needs more daily support). In the mornings when they check-in they set a daily points goal to achieve. Then at end of day they check back in to see how the day went. They earn rewards based on points & progress. Throughout the day if needed they may even have a quick check-in to refocus. They set goals & rewards together.

I think we should develop a Student Council : School ambassador roles can be long-term or for specific events, giving much-needed flexibility to our program. Students can participate in activities like school beautification, community service, or student opinion polls. Emphasize the value each student brings, encourage study groups, and use activities that promote collaboration and shared experiences. They can also help with events like fun runs and assemblies and much more!!

BENEFIELD ES

Ms. Shadburn-Rogers
