Weekly Post 2, Outliers, Chapter 4 (FIRST 3 COLUMNS) + Class Discussion by Stacy Bluth

Based on what you read in Chapter 4 of Outliers ("The Trouble With Geniuses Part II"), think of a word or short phrase (no more than six words) or an image that represents an important aspect of Langan and Oppenheimer's lives. You might consider their education, family, claim to fame, reactions to setbacks, etc. Place the word/short phrase or an image under the appropriate name (the first two columns). Your contributions will help create a mosaic of their experiences that we can analyze in class. Read your peers' responses and try not to submit duplicates. Then, respond briefly (a couple sentences should be enough) to the question in the last column.

You will have a total of three post it notes - one in each column. Please remember to include your name.

I think that both Langan and Oppenheimer could succeed at NC State. Both are hard working individuals and are excited to learn. NC State, in my personal experience, is willing to help their students when it comes to financial instability and adjusting schedules. This is an important factor that could have kept Lagan in school. Oppenheimer did not face insecurity during undergrad so I think he would also do well at State.

I think Langan and Oppenheimer would be successful at NC State, but possibly for different reasons. With their backgrounds and experiences being so different from one another, it is hard to gauge what they would be successful in. Oppenheimer, with his background and experience, maybe more successful in leadership positions at NC State. Langan on the other hand maybe more successful when it comes to events or topics that interest him or relate to him in some way. Both would be successful academically, but I also think that NC State would help them be successful in their own strengths through the unique opportunities and resources offered here.

I believe that Oppenheimer and Langan would have both been RELATIVELY successful at NC State. The system here is understanding enough (in my opinion) to work with Langan to keep him here and work with him on schedules. Since both are extraordinarily brilliant, I do not think class would be an issue. However, I cannot say that our school is built to house geniuses like them. There is definitely a ceiling you can reach here that would hold them back. So while they would most likely acquire a degree and go on to graduate school somewhere, I think that they would be better off somewhere that could tease their talent a little more.

I believe that Chris Langan would have done well at NCSU, especially in the absence of a global pandemic. Virtual learning has become barrier for many people who have access, but NCSU has provided resources like the Feed The Pack Food Pantry and technology rental programs, for people who come from financial disadvantages. Oppenheimer would have succeeded at NCSU as well. He may not have had the big opportunities he got at Harvard, but he still would have had a successful time as a student.

Both are brilliantly minded people who have the potential to be successful, and I think that NC State would be accommodating and understanding of Langan's needs. The professors I have had here have always been very understanding, and I'm sure they would be for Langan as well. I think Oppenheimer would be successful too because even though NC State isn't Harvard (it's better!) it's a great school and people go on to be very successful after graduating here.

I think that both of them would be successful at NC State due to their natural talents. Additionally, NC State is a very diverse school and has people from all sorts of backgrounds, so both of them would be able to find a space where they feel a sense of belonging on campus. However, it would be interesting to see how their lives on campus would differ, as I imagine Langan may be at State on a scholarship and/or have to be working a job in order to attend, which would obviously be harder to maintain than Oppenheimer, who may be having his parents pay for his schooling or something of the sort.

I think that both Langan and Oppenheimer could be successful at NC State. Though the discussion of Langan's possibility for success could be debated, I think Oppenheimer proved his ability to adapt to his environment and change his behavior to get ahead and stay ahead. This is in large part because of his parents' cultural training and concerned cultivation and the Matthew Effect he experienced early in life when he was sent off to do advanced math or speak in front of the Mineral Club. I also believe Langan could be very successful at NC State. In general, State is good at working with students and maintaining flexible scheduling, and many of the major setbacks Langan faced have been largely changed or erased.

I think Oppenheimer would do well because there are already a lot of Oppenheimers at out school that he would fit in with and the fact that being privilege and having money gets you far. Langhan could be successful or not because NC State also has a rep for not caring about students and serving only those who pour money into the school. The same things that happened to him at his other two schools or he could of had different experiences where a school was not caring for his needs happened causing him to drop out

NC State and most colleges in general are more helpful and for the students than in the past from what I've heard.

The two of them both could be successful wherever they wanted to go, they're geniuses. However, Langan had all odds against him his entire life. Poverty, family issues, bureaucracy, interpersonal problems, shall I go on? All of those extenuating factors led toward the demise of his educational career, but in the end he was the one who decided to drop out. Chris Langan would have had to face these external factors that were in his life regardless of where he went to school, but if he wanted to go to NC State and these issues were not a thing, then I think he would have been successful. There were just too many obstacles in his life for him to overcome, it is unfortunate. Oppenheimer on the other hand is a prime example of if you are good enough at something, you can always get a second chance. He literally had communist affiliations, yet managed to get appointed to one of the biggest military jobs in American history. So if the question is about whether or not he would be successful if he decided to go to NC State, well I think the answer is quite clear. Yes.

Oppenheimer would flourish due to the prominence of STEM education and although the chapter never specifies what area of study Lagan excelled in I am guessing he was very STEM oriented as well. In todays time I do not think the institution would be able to overlook an attempted murder, so it is tough to say whether or not Oppenheimer would remain at the university. Lagan would have likely received more support from the university staff, especially in the way of advising. Today, we get emails involving financial aid regularly and it is very easy to change your schedule, so I think he would have been able to graduate.

I think that Langan would be successful at NC State but I do not think that Oppenheimer would. I think that the modern world has gotten a lot better at recognizing the differences in privilege of a lot of people and has improved since Langan's time in making things more equitable for people like him. There are certain safety nets to prevent things like what happened to Langan from happening to modern students. There are emails after emails and advisors who you meet with and all sorts of things like that that would've prevented Langan's situation from happening to modern students. However, Oppenheimer, I believe, sadly would still struggle in today's collegiate world. I think Oppenheimer's downfall lay in having to take classes that he was so incredibly apathetic to. Oftentimes college is seen merely as a stepping stone to joining the workforce and working for the rest of your life. This pathology can be detrimental to students in their development because college can and should be so much more that just that. I think that the collegiate world has a little ways to go before people like Oppenheimer would've been successful.

They both would have been successful, but Oppenheimer would definitely have the advantage. Langan is intelligent, a hard worker, and he loves learning. NC State now has a lot of programs and advisors to help students overcome obstacles. But, Oppenheimer is much better at advocating for himself (minus the attempted murder). This quality would probably earn him favor as far as networking goes, thus giving him more opportunity.

His non-biological father Jack was a alcoholic and was abusive to him and his brothers. The school system he was apart of was also lackluster and undermining of potential. Oppenheimer on the other hand was born in a 'high society' environment and was persuaded by his parents to develop his skills. The parents also taught him how to assert his authority and express his entitlement.

These pages talk about how children in middle class or wealthier families grow up with a sense of entitlement with how to talk to adults. They are raised to know how to stick up for themselves, and Laureau uses an example with how a middle class boy would speak to a doctor. She compares this to poor children, who are shown by example (their parents) to stay quiet and let the authority figures do their thing. Oppenheimer was an extreme of the example of wealthier children, and Langan was an extreme of the example of a poor child with an abusive step father.

Chris Langan had very little concerted cultivation when it came to the way he was parented. It appears that his parents used more physical punishment and didn't really try to give him much help with school related things. After all, his mom was basically the reason he lost his scholarship which ultimately set him up to have several long term struggles. On the other hand, Oppenheimer is a prime example of concerted cultivation, as he was given tutoring and lots of other help once it was realized that he was gifted. Ultimately, his parents willingness to help and push him to reach his goals really set him up for his successes

Langan struggled with every interaction that involved talking. Even during a general conversation with his calculus professor he was got cut short. He lost his scholarship due to his mother failing to provide help in his financial aid, and eventually dropped out of college completely. Oppenheimer on the other hand knew exactly what to say, at the right time, and how to say it. This gave him a huge advantage with any discussion involving benefits for him.

Gladwell is saying that within our economy and culture, the middle and high class parents raise their kids more fit to survive in our society than low class families. The wealthier families know how to excel the capabilities of their children and hone them, even if it may put more stress or pressure on the kids. This can sometimes have great benefits or worse. The middle/higher class families do not have to worry about as many factors of basic necessity as poorer families, so they can focus their children less on survival and independence, and more on shaping their skills.
