Rose: For lockdown I moved back home and started working full time for Tesco. It was great to be with my family and when things eased I got to see a few people I wouldn't have normally seen while in Leeds. Lockdown has been quite difficult because it feels as though the measures have disproportionately affected students and young adults.

Sarah: I moved back home and spent lots of time with my family which was quite nice for a bit.

Rose: It has been quite surreal as it feels as though I should be going into Rodger Stevens and sitting in for lectures. It has also been quite difficult as library spaces and study spaces on campus have been booking up too quickly and I haven't got any wifi currently so is becoming increasingly difficult to do my work / watch lectures.

Sarah: I'm concerned about when I'll be able to see my friends I don't live with, it's a shame we're all in Leeds and can't see each other.

Rose: My concerns are that learning will be affected. I am also concerned that socially things will change. I feel like going to uni isn't just about learning your subject its about social interactions and these are lacking now that everything is online.

Sarah: I'm concerned about when I'll be able to see my friends I don't live with, it's a shame we're all in Leeds and can't see each other.

Question 1. The World Health Organisation defines well-being as “positive mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

•Do you think this definition captures well-being for students? What is contentious about it? What doesn’t fit with student life? What’s missing? How would you improve its applicability to students?

I think the definition lacks a fundamental part of student life which is socialising. Even people who aren't particularly sociable should still have a couple of people they are close to who they can rely on. I think it's also hard to contribute to the community at the moment, unless wearing a mask counts.

Question 2. This is a validated measure of well-being for adult populations. Label these as predominantly relating to hedonic or eudiamonic well-being, and if they are primarily cognitive, emotional or behavioural (or interacting).

Question 3. The NHS have been publishing the following steps to well-being for many years; connect with other people, be physically active, learn new skills, give to others and pay attention to the present moment.

In your opinion and experience, are these steps useful to protect or enhance student well-being? What do you think needs to be amended / added to these steps to make them acceptable and effective for student well-being (consider hedonic and eudiamonic components)?

These steps are all very involved with other people, as in connect with others and give to others. I think that someone's well-being should not be judged on how they interact with other people. There are many people out there that are quite introverted, yet have a positive well-being.
It would also be important to add simple steps like, sleep well, eat well and drink water as these are all essential for a good well-being and are sometimes overlooked.

Eudaimonic: having a greater goal to work towards doesn't necessarily mean a better well being. One can just live happily every day as it comes.

Hedonic:

I find that being part of a team and training regularly has a positive impact on my well being and means that I am in more of a routine which is a positive influence for me.

Sarah: Carry on leaving the house in the morning to go for a walk/run as it makes me feel slightly more energised at least for the start of the day.
