The Anglo-Saxons enjoyed victories because they displayed strength, courage, and leadership. When they achieved a victory, they ate domesticated animals, drank ale and other alcoholic beverages, sang long and enthusiastic songs, and had large feasts and parties in the mead-hall. They also gave many long speeches that emphasized the success of their victory, and bragged about their hero’s abilities and how the victory was accomplished. However, it was frowned upon to drink in excess and get drunk in the king’s home, mainly because they couldn’t fight drunk because they would pass out and have no control over themselves, but they did it anyways.

They didn’t take defeats very lightly, however. Since they valued the traits of strength, courage, and success, a defeat in battle or a defeat to a common enemy countered those traits. Even when one of their kings died, they viewed it as a defeat and mourned for a long time because of their loyalty to him. They often sang sad lays in response to a defeat. In the case of a defeat, they were often ruled by the victor, and this resulted in them praying to their gods to help liberate them from their enemy’s rule. In Beowulf, the people cried and prayed when Grendel kept on eating them, and wouldn’t go away for 12 years.
