It should give an idea that can be discussed and explained with supporting ideas (this is very important - you can't have a thesis that everyone will automatically agree with, there should be an argument, something to discuss)

2. A thesis statement should not be a sentence that simply states a fact about the topic (e.g. In the Northern Hemisphere the summer months are warmer than the winter months --- this is obvious and there is nothing to discuss, so won't work as a thesis statement)

3. A thesis statement should not state two sides of the argument equally (e.g. There are advantages and disadvantages to using nuclear weapons - author's position is not clear, it is a very weak thesis. It can be revised like this: Although there are some advantages, using nuclear power has many disadvantages and should not be a part of our country's energy plan - now the author's position is clear)
