]]> 2015-03-09 04:30:12 UTC https://padlet.com/201225/grmay7vevfdb/wish/52543106 Story behind Daryl's Injury 204238 https://padlet.com/201225/grmay7vevfdb/wish/52543196 While on vacation with family at the beautiful Warsaw Island near Beaufort, South Carolina, Daryl Mitchell decided to take a relative's Kawasaki Ninja 900 motorcycle out for a joy ride during the early morning of November 10, 2001. Unfortunately, because it was so early in the morning, the sun had not risen yet so it was still dark out and he could not see the road upon which he was driving. He ended up driving on a gravel-strewn road which he then skidded off of, crashed, and the motorcycle ended up landing on top of him. The accident caused him to have a fractured wrist, punctured lungs, bruised organs and kidneys, and unfortunately damage to his spinal cord. This damage to his spinal cord left him paralyzed from the waist down.

This ranges from loss of function in the hip and leg region to complete loss of voluntary functions from the neck down. The lower the injury on the spinal cord the less severe the side effects. Luckily Daryl suffered an injury on the lower region of his spine resulting in minor side effects.

The term for Daryl's condition is paraplegia which means that he has lost functions in some of his trunk and his legs. There is also tetraplegia or quadriplegia which result in the loss of movement in all limbs, loss of control in the torso, and loss of control in pelvic organs.

There have been advances in technology that allow people with disabilities interact and go about the day with greater ease. Research s currently being done to help people who lost control of their legs regain control (exo-skeletons) and research is being done to see if it is possible to repair the damaged nerves.
