The Eastern Mediterranean patriarchs and bishops benefited much as Rome became increasingly isolated and unimportant to the larger Mediterranean Church. The empire's political core drifted eastward to the eastern Mediterranean. Rome lost the Senate to Constantinople, as well as its imperial rank and gravitas. The West's dominant language was Latin, whereas the East's was, of course, Greek. The number of people who spoke both Latin and Greek began to decline soon after the fall of the Western Empire, making communication between East and West considerably more difficult. Both sides began to distrust the other. With their language unity shattered, their cultural unity shattered as well. They created various liturgies and had varied perspectives on religious concepts. The Second Council of Lyon was convened to fulfill Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII's promise to reconcile the Eastern and Western churches. Pope Gregory X had sent an embassy to Michael VIII, who had reconquered Constantinople, in order to end the Great Schism once and for all. On the problematic Filioque question, the Roman Catholic Church has recently demonstrated considerable flexibility. Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI recited the Nicene Creed together with Patriarchs Demetrius I and Bartholomew I in Greek — without the Filioque — following the Roman Catholic Church's practice of include the clause when reciting the Creed in Latin but not when reciting the Creed in Greek.
