In the beginning of the play Duke Senior had been banished and went to the Forest of Arden as refuge. While there him and his men lived off the land. This scene in the play explains pastoral literature because this form of literature involves living off the land. Duke Senior when he arrived began to tear apart the forest by killing deer and removing trees to get food and shelter. This disrupted the natives and the peace of the forest itself. Jaques made a big deal of it when he spoke to the Duke.
