When the battle was getting difficult for us, he stepped up and took charge, repairing weapons, getting ammo, and giving orders to his troops. Besides his war efforts, he returned from the war and continued helping the country by selling war bonds. He was a person that was looked up to by all young soldiers, making him such an important figure.

John Basilone was considered one of America's greatest war heroe. In the battle of Guadalcanal, John Basilone single handedly killed almost 150 on coming Japanese soldiers by picking up his scorching 30 cal machine gun and placing it onto his arm to allow him to move about while still firing. He was the first Marine to be awarded with the Medal of Honor, and was able to rise from small town American life to becoming a Nation's a superstar. John Basilone's courage on the battlefield of Guadalcanal inspired millions to buy war bonds and join the war cause.

John Basilone was an American Hero because of his selflessness towards his men and his country. He was not only an American war hero because of what he did in combat, but it was his role in persuading Americans to become involved in a war in which we needed a lot of help to win. He followed orders and lived out his life as an American soldier, and he eventually died in Iwo Jima, fighting for the country and the Army that he loved. John Basilone was a hero in the war as a soldier, at home as a husband and son, in the US as a propaganda tool, and as a man in general. This is why John Basilone was not only a war hero, but an American hero.

John Basilone ended up as such an american hero for two reasons. The first reason he was so popular was because he came from nothing. This made him very relatable. And the second reason is for what he did on Guada canal. John alone with the 7th marines were able to hold the left flank mainly thanks to John's heroics during that battle. For being a hero and a human at the same time John will always be remembered for what he did.

But when turmoil hit, Basilone laid his life on the line by directing the front lines in battle on Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. A specific example of his lack of fear was when he picked up a burning hot machine gun and destroyed a large collection of enemy troops.
