Workshop title - A PRACTICE OF CALL AND RESPONSE

Please bring with you a collection of “resources” drawn from any aspect of your artistic research or practice. This could be an artwork, a text, an object, a place, an image, a story, a tool - whatever you can think of.

Workshop description

As a multidisciplinary artist, I carry many methods with me, from different aspects of my practice. My background in dance introduced me to the concept of call and response - a method of improvised interaction between musicians and dancers where both become simultaneously the caller and the responder. This method led me to African cosmology and the work of Fred Moten, exploring the ways that history is always already happening and the response is already there waiting. From my background making performance I learned of the RSVP cycle method for creating performative works. RSVP cycles is a response system developed in 1969 by Anna Halprin (choreographer) and Lawrence Halprin (architect) as a way to explore collaborative, and process oriented making. This response system utilises Resources - Scores, Value-action - Performance (RSVP). I like to interpret these elements as Research - Scripting - Thinking - Action (experience).

In this workshop I will share some of my previous works and talk about how Call and Response and the RSVP cycles fed into my making processes.

I will then lead you through some tasks to explore ways of using these methods to create your own performative work, incorporating the different elements of your own creative practice.

At GYG 23/24, we stand as a collective of young artists united by a shared vision: to leverage the power of art for social change and foster accessible artistic expression. We firmly believe that through collaboration, exhibitions, and workshops, we can spark crucial conversations and inspire meaningful action regarding the pressing environmental, social, and governmental issues of our time.

Our commitment to artistic accessibility remains paramount. We envision exhibitions that serve as vibrant platforms for diverse artistic voices, inviting dialogue and promoting critical thinking. Beyond mere observation, we strive to be reactionary forces, actively channeling our artistic expression into projects that directly address these critical challenges.

Collaboration is the cornerstone of our mission. We recognize the amplified impact achieved by working together, reaching a broader audience and fostering a synergistic exchange of ideas. Our exhibitions will manifest this spirit, showcasing a multitude of perspectives and promoting open discourse.

However, our influence extends beyond the gallery walls. We are dedicated to engaging the next generation through specifically designed public events for young people. Interactive workshops and thought-provoking discussions will empower and equip them to actively participate in shaping a more just and sustainable future.

We invite you to join us on this transformative journey. Regardless of your artistic experience, your voice and vision are vital contributions. Together, we can transform art into a powerful tool for positive change, leaving a lasting impact on the world.

This manifesto is only the beginning. We encourage you to actively participate in this dialogue, challenge our perspectives, inspire us with your vision, and most importantly, create alongside us. Let us champion the power of art and collectively strive for a future where it truly matters.

However, we have also been asked if we want to contribute to a Time Capsule project to celebrate the development of the Clydeside Market Halls and the 150th anniversary of The Briggait. Artist Kayleigh McGuinness will pop in at 5pm to tell us about that and, if you want to, you can give her a copy of your manifesto to be added to the Capsule.

Some info here:

https://www.waspsstudios.org.uk/project/the-briggait-phase-2/
