Digital portfolios are very useful tools because:

- They naturally show student growth, reflection, and progression throughout a semester or year.

- They allow for self-reflection, which is important when trying to build student ownership.

- They allow students to feel a sense of pride in their work. They give students the freedom to choose and figure out what pieces they actually want included in their portfolios.

- They allow for viewers to see a range of work. Don't just throw in students' best work; also include mediocre or "needs improvement" work to better show growth!

- They are a productive use of technology and encourage students to explore more options they didn't know were out there and to use new tools.

- They could improve interpersonal connections, such as if parent-teacher or student-teacher conferences were linked to these portfolios.

- They're a nice fusion of multimedia sources; there isn't really a limit to what digital portfolios can contain and display.

Student interest and engagement should be peaked, first and foremost, because the project of creating a digital portfolio asks them to utilize technology, something they use every day and are fluent in. Students use "digital technologies to write many new kinds of text...Helping writers develop fluency and competence in a variety of technologies is a key part of teaching writing in this century" (Herrington, Hodgson, & Moran 7).

"Every Student Should Have a Digital Portfolio" http://www.gettingsmart.com/2015/06/every-student-should-have-a-digital-portfolio/

Yes, portfolios would be difficult to assess but not impossible. It's a natural tool that shows growth and (speaking of standardization) standards-based grading is all about the proof of growth and improvement and mastery of particular skills.
