The original flag of independence was developed in the year 1821 when San Martin proclaimed Peru's independence from Spanish rule. 
The three items within the shield on the flag are a vicuña which is Peru's national animal, a chichona tree which properties help heal those with malaria, as well as a cornucopia that symbolizes prosperity.
