My Dad, William Smith, signed up for war as soon as the call came out. He was really excited to see England again. He hadn't seen his parents since he emigrated to Canada as a young man. Here is a picture that he sent us of life in the trenches.

While my dad was at war, my mom, Evelyn was really busy. She started working in a factory which made weapons for the war. She was hardly ever at home. During her time off, she knit socks for the soldiers, and she also raised money and planned fundraisers.

It was incredibly dangerous landing on Juno Beach. I had never been so scared in my life. The soldier just behind me were shot before they ever made it to shore. We reached further on D-day than the Americans or the British did.

Today we heard that Hitler is hurting many people in Germany. He gives lots of speeches, and the German people seem to follow him. My dad decided to join the war because we have to "stand up to bullies." I am really afraid of the war.

My brother tried to smuggle alcohol into America. He had a regular trip, but on the most recent run, he finally got caught! He tried to say that he was taking the alcohol to Cuba. Eventually, he paid the customs officer and he brought the alcohol into the US.

My dad and his fellow soldiers fought bravely at Vimy Ridge. We were really excited to read about this battle in the newspaper. Dad only told us a few details when he wrote letters. I think the battle affected him and maybe he has some shell-shock.
